PARIS, France — A French woman fell victim to scammers who used artificial intelligence to make her believe she had a relationship with superstar actor Brad Pitt, eventually leading to her losing $850,000, reports say.

France 24 reports the scammers were able to convince the victim that Pitt was in a hospital battling cancer. The fake Pitt told the woman his bank accounts were frozen because of his divorce from actress Angelina Jolie.

The woman was sent fake photos showing Pitt and his mother, The Times reports. The fake Pitt also sent the woman poems and love letters, reports say.

The 53-year-old victim, identified only as Anne, reportedly has mental-health issues. She said she initially was skeptical after being contacted by the fake mother of Pitt, but then she was contacted by the fake Pitt as well.

“At first I said to myself that it was fake, that it’s ridiculous,” Anne said, according to French news network BFM TV. “But I’m not used to social media and I didn’t really understand what was happening to me.”

She began sending money from her own divorce settlement to the fake Pitt, reports say. She realized she had been duped when she saw news reports of the real Pitt with his current girlfriend.

“I ask myself why they chose me to do such harm like this?” the victim said during a TV appearance. “I’ve never harmed anyone. These people deserve hell.”

A TV interview with the victim has been withdrawn after it led to her being harassed and ridiculed online, reports say.
