Scotland was 'subject rather than partner' in British Empire, according to Scots
A new poll conducted by YouGov has revealed Scottish attitudes to the British Empire, with Scots more likely to see the country as a victim rather than a participant.
Scots are more likely to see Scotland as a victim of the British Empire rather than a partner, according to a new poll.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, the British Empire was the largest global power and was the biggest in history. Much of its historic wealth was derived from colonialism and slavery, with Scottish people being participants in and drivers of the empire.
On Wednesday, international internet-based market research and data analytics firm YouGov published the results of a poll looking at Scotland's attitude to the British Empire. The results show that Scots are most likely to hold a negative view of the empire.
According to the survey, 40 per cent of people in Scotland say the country was "more of a subject country in the British Empire". On the other hand, just 29 per cent of respondents stated that Scotland was "more of a partner with England in the British Empire".
The results show that 60 per cent of 2024 SNP voters believe that Scotland was a subject of the British Empire. Similarly, 55 per cent of those who voted for independence at the 2014 referendum say the same.
Among Scots who state that they know either a great deal or fair amount about Scotland’s role in the British Empire, 50 per cent believe the country was a partner rather than a subordinate. On the other hand, those who know little or nothing about the country's role in the empire are twice as likely to believe Scotland was a victim rather than a participant.

Additionally, Scots who say they know a great deal about Scotland’s involvement in the British Empire are much more likely to think Scotland played a large role, while those who know less tend to think its role was smaller. Overall, 35 per cent of Scots believe the country benefitted more than it suffered for being part of the British Empire.
Meanwhile, according to YouGov, negativity towards the British Empire is higher in Scotland than in the wider country. The results show that 30 per cent of Scots see the British Empire as shameful, while 22 per cent view it as a source of pride.

Despite Scots' negative attitude towards the British Empire, 18 per cent say that they wish the country had had its own empire at the same time. These figures are higher among SNP voters and those who voted for independence at the 2014 referendum, at 25 per cent and 27 per cent respectively.
However, 55 per cent of respondents stated that a Scottish Empire would have behaved similarly to similar empires. Only 13 per cent of Scots stated that they believed it would have behaved differently.
