Selena Gomez recently addressed the controversy surrounding her co-star Karla Sofia Gascón and the Oscar campaign for Emilia Perez, revealing that has “no regrets” about her involvement in the production.
During a panel at the Santa Barbara Film Festival on February 9th, a moderator asked how Gomez was doing in light of the recent headlines surrounding the film. Gomez replied by saying (per The Hollywood Reporter), “I’m really good. Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just, I’m just grateful and live with no regrets”.
She then added to this, noting, “And I would do this movie over and over again if I could”.
Gascón, who plays the lead character of Emilia Perez in the Jacques Audiard-directed musical, has been under intense scrutiny after social media posts resurfaced in which she made racist and Islamophobic statements.
After this came to light, Gascón, who is also the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for an Oscar, apologised and attempted to defend her statements. The star also arranged an unauthorised hour-long interview with CNN to discuss these controversies.
Gomez’s co-star Zoe Saldaña has tried to distance herself from the comments made by Gascón, saying, “It makes me really sad because I don’t support [it], and I don’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group”.
Last week, Audiard shared how he had cut ties with Gascón entirely, with Gascón announcing that she would step back from speaking about the film entirely, explaining, “Following Jacques’ interview that I understand, I decided, for the film, for Jacques, for the cast, for the incredible crew who deserves it, for the beautiful adventure we all had together, to let the work talk for itself, hoping my silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference,” Gascón wrote on Instagram. “I sincerely apologise to everyone who has been hurt along the way.”
