Severance: Lumon's Goat Department Explained

WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Severance season 2, episode 3!After plenty of speculation around the location, Severance season 2, episode 3 finally explores more of the goat-raising department at Lumon, which opens up more questions than it answers. The concept of goats being held on Lumon’s severed floor was introduced back in Severance season 1, episode 5, as Helly and Mark’s exploration of the area led them to a room where an unnamed man was feeding milk to baby goats. Before the two left, the man cryptically told them, “You can’t take them yet. They’re not ready,” before yelling at Mark and Helly to get out.
While season 1 didn’t elaborate on the goat mystery, season 2 finally expands on what’s known about that department. In Severance season 2, episode 3, Mark and Helly explore the severed floor to speak with other departments about where Ms. Casey/Gemma might be. They stumble upon a hall for goats to crawl through, which leads them to a grassy room with numerous goats wandering around while a few Lumon employees watch and wrangle them. Mark and Helly end up meeting the head of the “Mammalians Nurturable” department (Gwendoline Christie), who gives some clues to the goats’ real purpose.
What The Mammalians Nurturable Department Does For LumonSeverance season 2 officially confirms that the department in charge of raising the goats is Mammalians Nurturable, which has a team of severed employees much bigger than Lumon's Macrodata Refinement department. As seen in season 1, the Mammalians Nurturable department is responsible for raising and tending to goats, the said “nurturable” mammal. Additionally, based on the Goat Wrangler’s season 1 lines, the department is getting the goats “ready” for some purpose with Lumon, but the company has seemingly taken them away too early on occasion.
It appears there are quite a few ways that the goats are nurtured and raised by Mammalians Nurturable. In addition to bottle-feeding them milk, the severed employees dress up like black goats to blend in with the kids, put them in “husbandry tanks,” and use shears to groom them. Some employees also dress in hybrid business and farming clothes that are reflective of old-fashioned dairy farming and milkmaid attire, suggesting that Lumon believes this style will help the employees raise the goats better.

Of course, just like with Macrodata Refinement not knowing what their numbers really mean, the Mammalians Nurturable department is likely unaware of what Lumon’s deeper purposes are with the goats. Like MDR, they’re simply instructed to fulfill their duties by raising the goats in a certain manner outlined by Lumon. Rather than being an innocent experiment into how severed people would raise goats, there’s likely a much darker and troubling reason for Mammalians Nurturable’s work on this floor.
What Are The Goats Really Being Used For At Lumon?The Goats Are Likely Test Subjects Before Lumon Does Experiments On PeopleWhen Helly and Mark go to the Mammalians Nurturable department, they’re quickly met by Gwendoline Christie’s new unnamed Severance season 2 character, who defensively holds up a pair of shears while asking, “Are you here to kill me?” While this could be referring to the feuds fostered among Lumon’s various severed departments due to the company’s different forms of anti-fraternizing propaganda, it could also mean that she knows something about Lumon’s dark secrets and expected retaliation. Similar to MDR’s numbers secretly being used for Lumon’s experiments on severed people, the goats are likely another step in this procedure.

That may be why Lumon employees come and take the goats from Mammalians Nurturable at a certain time even if they’re “not ready,” as the company could be testing the goats to see if the husbandry tactics implemented have gotten them up to the unknown standards Lumon is expecting within a certain timeframe.

There’s also the possibility that the goats themselves have severance chips implanted in their brains by Lumon. It wouldn’t be beyond the company’s morals to do unethical testing for the severance chip on goats before doing so on humans. If so, Mammalians Nurturable successfully raising young severed goats (of course, without Lumon’s Innie and Outie situation) might be giving the company guidelines for how they could similarly raise children who get the severance procedure.
Why Lumon Was Putting Ms. Casey In Mammalians Nurturable's Husbandry TanksLumon Was Using The Tanks To Develop Ms. Casey In A Specifically Cultivated EnvironmentWhen Mark and Helly ask whether Gwendoline Christie’s character has seen Ms. Casey in the department, she reveals that Ms. Casey used to do “sessions” in their husbandry tanks. It’s unclear what exactly these tanks are, but it’s implied that they’re typically used for cultivating various aspects of the goats’ biology and development. Since Ms. Casey is also being placed in them, then there must be some overlap with Lumon’s tests on the goats and severed people, with these tanks perhaps being used to properly develop and sustain an Innie’s mental and biological processes however Lumon wants them.
Gwendoline Christie's character confirms that, as far as the Mammalians Nurturable department is aware, Ms. Casey was simply "retired" like Lumon said.
While Mark’s work on the Cold Harbor file might be working to refine Ms. Casey’s personality, behavior, and psychology, the tanks in Mammalians Nurturable could be refining her physical sustenance and biological development. It’s possible that every severed department is unknowingly working on the Cold Harbor project in some way, as it’s easiest for Lumon to keep their secrets about human experimentation within their walls when the work is being done by severed people.
Why The Mammalians Nurturable Department Thinks MDR Has PouchesOne of the most peculiar moments in Helly and Mark’s visit to Mammalians Nurturable in Severance season 2, episode 3 occurs when Gwendoline Christie’s character makes them show their stomachs in front of the other department workers. After doing so, Christie’s character tells her colleagues, “See? Pouchless.” Another employee retorts that showing their stomachs means nothing, indicating that Mammalians Nurturable has been given repeated propaganda claiming that Macrodata Refinement workers have stomach pouches akin to kangaroos.

This isn’t the first time that MDR employees have been accused of having pouches. That idea was first brought up during Burt and Irving’s scenes together in Severance season 1, as the former explained there was a widespread rumor that MDR employees are all marsupials with larvae in their pouches that will eventually eat and replace them. It seemed like this theory was only spread around Optics and Design, but Severance season 2 now confirms that it also made its way to the goat wranglers.
