Loveable ogre Shrek and his family are back for their first movie adventure in 16 years, and actress Zendaya has joined the voice cast.
A teaser trailer for the animated sequel has been released in which Donkey asks the magic mirror who is the fairest of them all, and the answer turns out to be Shrek, after it appears that Pinocchio has doctored a few images of our favourite green hero to make him look more appealing. Shrekâs wife Fiona and their teen daughter appear, and it is revealed that Zendaya will be supplying her voice.
After the news was released, Zendaya shared a post from 2017, in which she had tweeted âI watch Shrek too often in my adulthood,â and she added the comment: âThis aged well.â The Euphoria and Challengers star joins Shrek regulars Eddie Murphy as the voice of Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, and Mike Myers as Shrek. The new movie is set for release on 23 December 2026, 25 years after the original film.

UniversalPictures/YouTube)The original Shrek movie was released by DreamWorks Animation in 2001, and was followed by Shrek 2 three years later, Shrek the Third in 2007 and Shrek Forever After in 2010. There have also been two Puss In Boots spin-off movies, featuring Antonio Banderas as the voice of Puss, that were released in 2011 and 2022.
The Shrek films are loosely based on William Steigâs picture book Shrek! and focus on grumpy but big-hearted ogre Shrek, who embarks on a quest to rescue a princess in the first movie, with the help of a wisecracking donkey named Donkey.
The movies featured many memorable fairytale characters, including Prince Charming (voiced by Rupert Everett), the Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders), and Merlin (Eric Idle). Julie Andrews and John Cleese (as Fionaâs parents), and chat show host Jonathan Ross (as Ugly Sister Doris) have also supplied voices.
Zendaya has joined the Shrek 5 castBack in 2004, Jeffrey Katzenberg, who was head of DreamWorks, revealed that five Shrek movies had always been the plan. He told IGN : "Shrek 3 and 4 are going to reveal other unanswered questions and, finally, in the last chapter, we will understand how Shrek came to be in that swamp, when we meet him in the first movie. There is a reason he came to be there, but there is another chapter to the story before that."
However, by the time Shrek Forever After was released in 2010, the filmmakers were calling the fourth movie the âfinalâ film, with creative production head Bill Damaschke telling USA Today: âAll that was loved about Shrek in the first film is brought to the final film.â
Last June, Eddie Murphy revealed that the Shrek story was not over and a fifth film was on its way. In an interview with Collider, he said: âShrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie. We're gonna do Donkey as well. So we're gonna do a Shrek, and we're doing a Donkey [movie].â
