Shrek fans say ‘cancel the whole thing’ after huge announcement on new film

DreamWorks made a huge announcement yesterday with a shock teaser for a highly anticipated movie. Shrek 5 is officially in the works and is due to be released to cinemas in December 2026.
Yesterday, February 27, a 30-second trailer was released on X, formerly known as Twitter, showing a teaser of what's to come in the fifth Shrek film.
After years of rumours swirling, DreamWorks confirmed there would be another Shrek film coming in July last year - but this is the first look fans have had at the characters since the initial announcement.
Many of the original cast members are returning including Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona. But, in an unexpected surprise, there is an additional cast member. Euphoria actor Zendaya is appearing in the new film as Shrek's daughter.
The first Shrek film was released in 2001, the second in 2004, third in 2007 and the fourth and latest Shrek film in 2010. Now, more than 15 years later, fans are getting the fifth.
And while it is an exciting time for Shrek fans everywhere - and let's be honest, who isn't a Shrek fan? - not everyone is pleased after seeing the trailer.
Straight away you can tell that the animation is different and the adored characters don't look the same as in the first four films, although some people even complained back in 2010 that the style of animation in the fourth film was different, looking more cartoon-like.
The animation in the Shrek 5 trailer more closely resembles the 2022 film Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. The Puss in Boots sequel's film design was inspired by Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) to make the film look more like storybook illustrations. And it seems that Shrek 5 has taken on that similar style.
While change isn't always a bad thing, Shrek carries so much nostalgia and comfort for people all over the world that the new-age Shrek seems to have caught people's attention all over social media.
Over on X, many fans are sharing their opinion on the new trailer.
@_jazllyn wrote: "what’s up with their faces?", and @Old_Fat_Gamer commented: "Absolutely not. I don't know what this is but it ain't Shrekin for me. Looks like a dollar store budget build. Hardest of passes if not changed."
@SygmaDude simply stated: "This is not Shrek.", @ahh_adan wrote: "yall gonna have to change this style. ASAP", and @MarioEmmet declared: "The art style looks horrible.".
And the criticism for the new Shrek keeps on coming as X user @suayrez wrote: "Not my Shrek family", and @ListeningToAbel said: "What happened to the animation? The animation was fantastic with the previous versions. Hopefully they improve it before release.".
X user @DoktorSAS wrote: "Nah... I won't watch it. I don't want to spoil my memory of Shrek. Not risking my sacred memories of the almighty Shrek being tarnished.", and @Parker_Leach begged: "CHANGE THE ANIMATION PLEASE".
@THEHORRORGOTH joked: "can we bully dreamworks to change the shrek 5 animation like we did to paramount to change sonic’s animation?", and @Sammyfabelmen wrote: "Just saw the new animation for shrek 5 just cancel the whole thing at this point".
However, it is not all bad. X user @viennavtuber said: "YIPPEEEE im lowkey excited for it!! Loved shrek as a kid", and @xboxuk commented: "We are so back baby".
