Sky News anchor shares 'breaking news' in huge blow to Keir Starmer
A Sky News anchor shared breaking news live on air on Monday morning, in a huge blow to Keir Starmer as the Labour leader continues to face a number of challenges.
During Monday's broadcast, Sky News anchor Darren McCaffrey took a moment to deliver some urgent breaking news concerning migration across the English Channel, which will come as a significant setback for Keir Starmer.
McCaffrey reported: "Let's just bring you up to date with a little bit of breaking news coming to us at Sky, it involves the number of migrants crossing the English channel.
‌
"According to government sources this morning, 592 people arrived yesterday on 11 different boats, that is the highest number of migrants who have managed to cross the English Channel this year and clearly it has been a big political issue, tens of thousands arriving every single year over the last couple of years."
"We've had a good weekend of weather, that is normally a determinant for people's ability to cross the Channel but as I say, we have the highest number of arrivals so far this year," he announced as he assured viewers that Sky would continue to provide updates on the situation.
‌
This development is likely to cause headaches for Starmer's administration, already under pressure to address issues related to migration.
Recently, on 1 March, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper made a notable journey—the first by a home secretary in five years—to inspect the French coast and evaluate how £540m of UK taxpayers' money is being spent to counteract people-smuggling operations.
‌
Compared to the first two months of 2024, there had been a 41% decrease in successful crossings this year.
Nevertheless, the spike in crossings will undoubtedly be disheartening news for both Starmer and Cooper, reports The Express.
Following Starmer's well-received handling of the intense exchange between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House last week, he has been in the spotlight.
‌
After a summit with European leaders, Starmer confirmed they are facing a "once-in-a-generation moment for the security of Europe", highlighting: "We all need to step up."

He further added: "In my conversations in recent days, we agreed a group of us will work with Ukraine on a plan to stop the fighting, and then discuss that with the US and take it forward together," and "Even while Russia talks about peace, they are continuing their relentless aggression."

He concluded speaking on the importance of unity: "That is the agenda and we need to agree what steps come out of this meeting to deliver peace through strength for the benefit of all. So, let's get started."
