Sky News reporter breaks down on air reading details of Southport murders
Sarah-Jane Mee struggled to hold back tears as she reported live from Liverpool Crown Court on the day Axel Rudakubana is due to be sentenced
A Sky News reporter broke down in tears during a live broadcast as she read out 'distressing' details of the Southport attack that left three children dead.
Sarah-Jane Mee was reporting live for the news channel from outside Liverpool Crown Court on the day that Axel Rudakubana is due to be sentenced. Earlier this week, the 18-year-old admitted killing the three girls - Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven - in a knife attack at a Taylor Swift dance class in the Merseyside town on July 29 last year.
He also pleaded guilty to the attempted murders of eight other children who cannot be named for legal reasons, class instructor Leanne Lucas and businessman John Hayes.
Reporting from outside the same court on Thursday afternoon, Ms Mee read out harrowing details of the attack heard during the defendant's sentencing hearing. Follow live updates from court here
During an interview with Tawhid Islam, chief executive of Liverpool Muslim Council, Ms Mee detailed a statement from prosecutor Deanna Heer KC, which had been heard in court this afternoon. Ms Mee warned viewers that what she was about to say was "really distressing as you would expect from this case".

Ms Mee told viewers that the court heard that Mr Hayes, a local business man, was in the building at the time of the attack. He approached Rudakubana, who "swiped with a knife as he tried to grab hold of the weapon", she said. Mr Hayes was "stabbed in the leg and fell to the ground shouting for help", viewers heard.
Ms Mee continued: "The court goes on to hear that window cleaners who were driving past saw the class instructor, Leanne Lucas, covered in blood shouting 'someone's stabbing the kids'. One went into the building but retreated when he saw Rudakubana at the top of the stairs holding a knife.
"At the top of the stairs, they found the attacker standing over the body of a Bebe King holding a kitchen knife. One of the window cleaners picked her up and carried her out of the building screaming at the extent of her injuries. The court heard that police arrived at the scene to find people in a state of panic."
Ms Mee then paused as she struggled to compose herself after detailing the statement. Her voice shook, as she told viewers: "I'll just take a breath after that".
With Ms Mee out of shot and the camera focused on the outside of the court, Ms Mee remained silent for a moment before apologising to viewers. "Right, sorry it's just so distressing isn't it," she said.
Returning to her interview with Mr Islam, Ms Mee said: "We're here for those girls and the families so I'll try not to get upset because its such an important day for them and this is horror that came to their door."
Rudakubana was ordered to be removed from the dock by the judge during the sentencing hearing this morning after he started repeatedly shouting.
One family member shouted âcowardâ, while others shook their heads as he left. Rudakubana had been shouting: âItâs not my fault, I feel illâ, and repeatedly shouted for a paramedic.
Horrific CCTV was played to the court including footage showing one child trying to leave the building but being pulled back in. Gasps and sobs were heard from the public gallery as the girl was seen to re-emerge and collapse on the floor outside.
One woman in the public gallery put her hand over her face and sobbed, being comforted by those sitting next to her, as the video was played.
Liverpool Crown Court was also told that Rudakubana said âIâm glad theyâre deadâ as he was held in a custody suite after killing the three girls. Prosecutors said the injuries suffered by the victims were âdifficult to explain as anything other than sadistic in natureâ.
Rudakubana is due to be sentenced for the killings this afternoon.
