Slot reveals Alexander-Arnold's cup final chances in double injury update
England right-back and Ibrahima Konate both went off hurt during agonising Champions League defeat by PSG
Liverpool have suffered a major blow ahead of the Carabao Cup final with Trent Alexander-Arnold looking set to miss the clash with Newcastle at Wembley.
The England right-back limped off in the second half of normal time as the Reds were eliminated from the Champions League last 16 in agonising fashion on penalties by Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield on Tuesday night, having hurt himself making a challenge near the byline.
Alexander-Arnold received treatment on the pitch but could not continue and was replaced by Jarell Quansah, with Liverpool then receiving another huge defensive setback in extra time against PSG as Ibrahima Konate went down twice in quick succession before hobbling off himself as Wataru Endo was summoned from the bench.
And while Konate should be available for the Carabao Cup final with Arne Slot believing that the Frenchman was suffering from fatigue more than injury, runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool are very likely to be without Alexander-Arnold as they bid to claim their first silverware of the season on Sunday.
āI have to ask but for me Ibou [Konate] was more that he was tired than it was an injury. With Trent, he had to come off. Thatās never a good sign,ā Slot said at his post-match press conference.
āAnd from what I heard from people that saw the images or how he got injured, that didnāt look very good. So I would be surprised if he is available for Sunday.ā
Alexander-Arnold only returned from his second hamstring injury of the season last month and his latest absence comes at a time when Liverpool are also without two other right-back options in Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez due to respective hamstring issues.
Quansah seems the most likely replacement again for the 26-year-old, who, along with captain Virgil van Dijk and star forward Mohamed Salah, may yet have played his last Champions League and European match for his boyhood club with his contract set to expire in the summer and no agreement yet reached over an extension.
Quansah impressed off the bench against PSG, featuring heavily and hitting the post with a header with just over 10 minutes of normal time remaining with penalty shootout hero Gianluigi Donnarumma beaten, only for the offside flag to then go up.
The absences of Bradley and Gomez make things trickier still for Liverpool if it transpires that Konate is also injured and not able to play at Wembley against a Newcastle team whose preparations for the final have also been hampered by selection blows with the likes of Anthony Gordon, Lewis Hall and Sven Botman all unavailable.
Versatile midfielder Endo can play in defence, while youngsters such as Isaac Mabaya and Amara Nallo have been involved in the first team this season. Kostas Tsimikas is another full-back option but serves typically as the left-sided back-up for Andy Robertson.
