Soul music great Jerry Butler dies at 85 following Parkinson’s battle
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee died at his Chicago home on Thursday night of undisclosed causes.

Jerry Butler, a soul music giant who later served as a Windy City politician, has died following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 85.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee died at his Chicago home on Thursday night of undisclosed causes, a family friend told the Chicago Sun-Times.
Butler, a native of Sunflower, Miss., started singing as a teenager with Chicago’s Northern Jubilee Gospel Singers group alongside childhood friend Curtis Mayfield. The pair later joined the soul group The Impressions, which broke onto the charts in 1958 with the stirring doo-wop ballad “For Your Precious Love.”
The song, which Butler co-wrote, ranked as one of the 500 greatest of all time by Rolling Stone in 2004. Joe McEwen wrote in “The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock & Roll” that “the song could almost be considered the first soul record.”
The Impressions then scored a string of hits in the 1960s with “People Get Ready,” “Gypsy Woman” and “I’m So Proud.” Songs including “It’s All Right,” “Keep On Pushing,” and “We’re A Winner” served as anthems of the Civil Rights Movement.

He also co-wrote 1965’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” with Otis Redding, which was later re-recorded by Ike & Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones.

The Grammy Hall of Famer was married for 60 years to his late wife, Annette Smith, with whom he shared twin sons.
