Axel Rudakubana has today been handed a life sentence for murdering three young girls, with chilling details emerging about the teenage killer's state of mind.
The 18-year-old took the lives of Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, at a Taylor Swift dance class in Southport, Merseyside, on July 29 last year. He tried to murder 10 more people at the drama club at The Hart Space - yoga teacher Leanne Lucas, 35, businessman Jonathan Hayes, 63, who were critically injured in their fight to stop him, and eight children aged between 7 and 11.
Rudakubana was sentenced for three further offences today - possessing the knife he used to kill, producing a biological toxin called ricin and possessing a terrorist handbook about al-Qaida. Mr Justice Goose handed down a life sentence, ordering the killer to serve a minimum of 52 years as he said: "He will serve almost the whole of his life in custody."

Liverpool Crown Court heard a document called Military Studies in the Jihad against Tyrants: The Al-Qaeda Training Manual was found on a tablet belonging the killer during a search of his house. Chillingly, it contained a section called Assassinations Using Cold Steel: A: Assassinating with a Knife which gave advice on where the "enemy" should be struck in order to kill.
The document also contained a passage on assassination and mass murder and a section called Assassinations With Poison, which gave information on the production of ricin and explained that it is considered one of the most deadly poisons. "The manual had been downloaded on three occasions in 2021, meaning that it was already in the defendant’s possession when he purchased the castor beans from which he produced the ricin in early 2022," said prosecutor Deanna Heer KC.
"If that is right, then he clearly knew just how deadly a substance it was before he produced it. Furthermore, by the time he went to The Hart Space in 2024, the defendant was in possession of instructions in the manual on how to carry out a knife attack with lethal force."
More disturbing material was found on tablets owned by the twisted killer, including cached images of knives and machetes from Amazon. "There were also emails regarding Amazon deliveries and enquiries made with (online knife vendors)," said the prosecutor. "Some of the emails enquired whether deliveries could be made in plain packaging and revealed that the defendant had also tried to purchase a knife with a 20cm blade on June 21 2024 but the order was cancelled when he failed to pay. He then went on to buy the knife used in this assault."
Other violent material discovered include images of dead bodies, victims of torture and beheadings. Images relating to different wars and international conflicts were also found, including in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Korea, Iraq and The Balkans.
"The material found on these devices provides, the prosecution suggest, a window into the defendant's mind at this time," said Heer. "It demonstrates that he was fascinated with violence of an extreme nature, that he had obtained information on killings and how to kill and he had obtained weapons capable of killing.
"The evidence serves to demonstrates that he had planned to stab and the events at Hart Street were premeditated and had been planned by the defendant for several weeks."
