British holidaymakers driving in Spain could be fined a hefty £418 if they don't follow road rules, some of which do not exist in the UK.

In Spain, British holidaymakers should know that while using the left lane on motorways to overtake at speeds up to 74.5 mph is fine, you're also expected to move over for faster vehicles signalling from behind—especially if it's an emergency. However, confusion arises when another car approaches from behind, flashing its lights – it's not immediately clear whether you're required to move over.

Spanish law dictates that you should indeed make way, as the approaching vehicle could be responding to an emergency. Article 31 of the Reglamento General de Circulación (RGC) mandates that on Spanish motorways and dual carriageways, the right-hand lane must be used whenever possible, reserving the left lane strictly for overtaking.

The regulation specifies: "Outside urban areas, on roads with more than one lane reserved for the same direction of travel, a driver must normally use the rightmost lane."

This doesn't mean you can speed past other cars, but rather that after overtaking, drivers should return to the right lane when it is safe and practical. Both the overtaking driver and those travelling at higher speeds have responsibilities under the law, reports the Mirror.

Lane hoggers who fail to adhere to this rule may find themselves facing fines. On the flip side, drivers who tailgate, flash their lights aggressively, or undertake dangerously could be hit with even more severe penalties.

Drivers in Spain could be hit with fines for traffic offences that are categorised into three levels: minor offences cost €100.00 (£83.64), serious offences come in at €200.00 (£167.29), and very serious offences command a hefty €500.00 (£418.22) penalty. If you fail to signal when required, you could find yourself out of pocket by €200 (£167.29), while tardy indicator use may lead to an €80 (£66.92) fine.

When it comes to speeding, the punishment can range from €100 to €500 (£83.64 to £418.22), which depends on your speed and the type of road.

As per the RAC website: "In Spain, motorists drive on the right and overtake on the left. Vehicles exceeding 10 metres in length and weighing more than 3.5 tonnes must maintain a distance of at least 50m from the vehicle in front. The exception to this rule is in built-up areas, on roads where overtaking is prohibited, when there are multiple lanes in the same direction, or when traffic is so congested that overtaking another vehicle is not possible.

"Generally, drivers approaching an intersection must yield to all vehicles coming from the right. At roundabouts, drivers already on the roundabout have priority over those approaching it. Drivers on secondary roads must yield to vehicles coming from either direction when entering a main road. Emergency vehicles and vehicles on rails have priority over other road users.

"Unnecessary use of horns is forbidden. In urban areas, sounding the horn is not allowed at any time, except in an emergency. If you need to give a warning, flash your lights instead."
