The countdown is on for Dublin's massive St Patrick's Day parade, with hundreds of thousands of locals and tourists alike set to take to the streets of the capital on Monday.

Organisers say the 2025 national parade will be "bigger, better, and taller than ever".

This year's theme is Eachtraí - the Irish word for adventures - which captures the legendary adventurous spirit that defines us as a nation. Known and loved worldwide as a symbol of Irishness, it reflects our innate ability to turn fear into courage, face challenges head-on and embrace the unknown, forging new paths along the way.

Actress Victoria Smurfit, a native of Dublin, has been announced as the Grand Marshal and will lead out the parade. She is known for starring in Ballykissangel, Once Upon a Time, and Disney+’s Rivals.

The parade takes to the streets of Dublin city from 12 noon, winding its way from Parnell Square to Kevin St Junction.

Speaking in advance of the Festival opening, Lord Mayor of Dublin, Emma Blain said: "The National St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the most significant events in our city’s calendar. It’s an exciting celebration of Irish creativity, culture, and community. As my first St. Patrick’s Festival as Lord Mayor, I’m particularly looking forward to witnessing the vibrant pageantry and incredible talent that will bring Dublin’s streets to life this St. Patrick’s Day. I encourage everyone to join us and be part of this unforgettable celebration."

St. Patrick’s Festival CEO Richard Tierney added: "Every year, the National St. Patrick’s Day Parade continues to grow and amaze spectators both at home and abroad, and 2025 will be no exception, with this year’s festivities set to be bigger, better, and taller than ever. Leading the Parade is the incredible Victoria Smurfit, an outstanding Irish actress who has captivated audiences worldwide and brings an infectious energy and passion to this role."

Here’s all you need to know about the St Patrick’s Day Dublin 2024 parade.

What time does the parade start?

The 2025 National St Patrick's Day Parade will take place on Monday, March 17 at 12 noon, commencing from Parnell Square. It's expected to last around two hours, finishing up around 2pm.

What route will the parade take

The parade takes place in Dublin city centre, running from Parnell Square in the north of the city, down O'Connell Street, over O'Connell Bridge and into the southside, past Trinity College at College Green and on to Dame Street before it finishes near St Patrick's Cathedral.

What are the best viewpoints for the parade?

If you get there early, there are several spots you should nab to have the best view of the parade. One of the best viewpoints is right in the centre of the route, at the statue of Daniel O'Connell at the bottom of O'Connell Street.

If you want a great view but a more relaxed vibe, the parade will go straight past one of the best pubs in Dublin in The Lord Edward.

Our sister site Dublin Live recommends: "The second floor of the Lord Ed is a bit of a hidden gem in Dublin and has fantastic views of Christchurch Cathedral and therefore the parade route."

Where should I park for the parade?

Gardai are encouraging attendees to use public transport or park and ride facilities where possible. No vehicles can enter the parade route while closures are in place. Anyone planning to drive to the parade is encouraged to check where to park outside the closed roads and walk in.

Last year, officers shared the useful map below showing the full route for the St Patrick's Day Parade. Areas within the outline around the parade will be closed to traffic.

A parade spokesperson said: "In order for the Parade to pass smoothly and safely through the streets of Dublin, it requires a number of road closures in the city centre, from early in the morning of the parade through until the late afternoon."

Public transport options

Public transport in Dublin city centre will be restricted on St Patrick's Day due to the parade, especially bus services and the Red Luas tram line. However, all major DART stations will remain operational. The nearest DART stops to the parade route are Connolly and Pearse Street. If you're looking to catch the second half of the parade between College Green and St Patrick's Cathedral, buses to St Stephen's Green and the Green Luas tram line are your best options.

Full list of road closures

Certain roads and streets will be closed for the parade so anyone planning to drive to the festival is encouraged to check where to park outside the closed roads and walk in.
