Staggering cost of Meghan's huge fruit platter as mums slam 'unrealistic' recipe
In her new Netflix show, Meghan Markle arranges a rainbow-shaped fruit platter as she shares the joys of being a 'present parent' - but not all mums could relate to her
Meghan Markle's glossy Netflix show has sparked fury with parents who have branded her extravagant rainbow fruit platter as 'unrealistic'.
The Duchess of Sussex's highly-anticipated Netflix series, With Love, dropped today and follows her sharing her best gardening, cookery and hosting tips, alongside a host of celebrity pals, including Suits co-star Abigail Spencer, actor Mindy Kaling and chef Roy Choi. The trailer for the show, which was posted on social media yesterday, captured Meghan "finding fun in every day moments".
The mother-of-two opened up about the joys of being a "present parent" as she crafted a huge rainbow-shaped platter loaded with fruit, which she suggested families whip up for their kids' breakfasts to make the start of their days "a lot more fun". The former actress even topped her fruit with dried petals. But the advice has been mocked by some mums as the series debuts online.

In the show, Meghan can be seen placing fruits on a large wooden chopping board as she shared: "It's a real delight in being able to be a present parent, and it's a luxury sometimes, because we all have to work. We all have a lot of stuff to do, but when you can take a minute to just..." Meghan paused, as one of her filming crew then chimed in with "Saturday morning", to which she smiled and agreed.
Meghan, mum to five-year-old Archie and three-year-old Lilibet, continued: "Finding the fun in those moments makes for a really sweet start to the weekend." The whopping fruit plate - which appeared to have around three punnets of strawberries, two punnets of raspberries, a punnet of blueberries, three kiwis, a pineapple, four satsumas, three nectarines, a banana and dried rose petals - costs approximately £34 to make.
However, Meghan acknowledged that you don't need to prepare a fruit plate as extravagant as the one on her board, and instead, you could make a simpler and smaller version for a single breakfast. She said in the video: "You don't have to do a big platter of this. You could do this with one small row for your kids for breakfast, genuinely, and it makes the morning a lot more fun."

Demonstrating, she added that you could include "a little dollop of yoghurt" for clouds and "flower sprinkles, if we must" before adding edible flowers to the plate. She reassured viewers: "It doesn't need to be big for a party. It's how you can incorporate these practices every day." The Instagram clip was captioned: "Find the fun in the everyday moments" followed by a rainbow emoji.
The fancy fruit platter received mixed emotions online, with some lashing out at her 'unrealistic' standards. One person said on X: "Fruit and yoghurt arranged on a plate with a sprinkle of edible flowers, just screams 'kid food' to me, along with overhead lightening at kids parties lol. Very unrealistic for most working parents but hey... it's Meghan's world of staff, maids, nannies and millions in the bank."
Another wrote: "Many parents can't afford five or six kinds of fruit. Maybe a bag of apples or oranges. But all that??" And a third said: "I'd like to see her do this on a busy school morning, getting the kids up and dressed, making lunches and getting them to school on time." While someone commented on the clip: "Seriously, what busy mum has got time to fiddle about with a plate of fruit?"
On ITV's Good Morning Britain, presenter Richard Arnold poked fun at the former royal as he showed off his own platter, complete with an unpeeled banana, cornflakes and apple chunks. He joked that he hadn't added rose petals like Meghan, while co-presenter Susanna Reid said: "In the old days it used to be called a fruit salad."
On Lorraine, host Lorraine Kelly quipped: "Doesn't that all look so clean and gorgeous and lovely and unrealistic though, for the rest of us!" She went on: "Are you seriously, though, trying to say to me that you don't in the morning and everyone, when you're getting the kids out to school and stuff, that you don't cut up fruit in a beautiful way and put it in the shape of a rainbow? Are you telling me that?!"
However, other people were keen to stick up for the Duchess, with one person writing on X: "Imagine hating on Meghan Markle and she's just in her kitchen making little fruit rainbow plates for her kids." Another shared how Meghan had encouraged them to make a quick and easy pasta salad, writing: "Ordinarily I loathe cooking but Meghan's inspired me to find the joy in it - not perfection."
