No weapon is more iconic in Star Wars lore than the lightsaber. The Jedi's most sacred weapon is a prominent aspect of the galaxy far, far away, but even it has its weaknesses. One of the rarest materials in the Star Wars universe is the perfect counter for lightsaber combat, but it often flies under the radar despite its potential.
Cortosis is a rare mineral capable of resisting lightsaber strikes and repelling its energy back to its source. It’s been used to forge blades capable of short-circuiting lightsabers and can even provide protection against Jedi telepathy, as revealed in the Star Wars comics.
This material’s resistance to Jedi's combat strategies makes it a standout weapon that the Star Wars franchise continues to underutilize. With its rich history and versatile applications, it's a mystery why Cortosis hasn’t played a larger role in modern Star Wars storytelling.
Cortosis Has a Fascinating Legacy in Star Wars LoreOne of the First Anti-Jedi Weapons
Cortosis's ability to disrupt a lightsaber's energy field made it a game-changer in galactic conflicts. The material was introduced to disable lightsaber-based combat during the Jedi Civil War. It was eventually used to forge blades called vibroswords, which can slice through a lightsaber's blade upon contact. In The Acolyte, fans saw a glimpse of what Cortosis can do. The Stranger took on multiple Jedi by shorting out their lightsabers with a headbutt from his Cortosis helmet. The helmet also prevented the attacking Jedi from entering his mind, cutting off their ability to predict his attacks.
Why Is the Star Wars Franchise Sleeping on Cortosis as a Weapons?Especially Since It's So Powerful
Fans may wonder why modern Star Wars lore doesn't fully utilize the power of Cortosis. For one thing, creators may be hesitant to do so, as introducing a plethora of countermeasures suddenly makes the Jedi much less intimidating. Flooding the galaxy far, far away with Cortosis would weaken the Jedi's influence on the galaxy. However, the Beskar armor worn by the Mandalorians is also impervious to lightsabers. While it may not cause them to short-circuit or provide telepathic immunity like Cortosis, they offer similar advantages. The presence of Beskar hasn't weakened the Jedi's role in any way, so neither should Cortosis.

The Acolyte proved how effective cortosis is in countering lightsabers, but the Jedi Order never used cortosis against the Sith for a few reasons.
Cortosis's ability to disrupt the galaxy's most iconic weapon could reshape Star Wars combat. From disrupting lightsabers to offering tactical advantages in battles, its presence could elevate many Star Wars stories. It's easy to imagine entire armies outfitted with Cortosis armor or bounty hunters using Cortosis blades to even the playing field against the Jedi. Given its rich history and demonstrated effectiveness, it’s tragic that it hasn’t been more widely featured in recent Star Wars narratives. With so much potential left unexplored, it’s time for Star Wars to stop sleeping on Cortosis, one of its best weapons.
