Stephen Fry has been praised for his brutally honest take-down of Donald Trump as he expressed his concerns over the "darkening shadow" over the world and likened some world leaders to "bullies".

Appearing on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show, the iconic actor and broadcaster pulled no punches as he was quizzed on Ukraine. He previously visited the country and interviewed President Volodymyr Zelensky in 2023.

Viewers were quick to share their reactions on social media. One posted on X: "Yet another example of Stephen Fry being a national treasure." Another said: "These are the voices of reason we need in this time of uncertainty."

Another added: "Just when I thought I couldn't love Stephen Fry any more. Absolutely hit the nail on the head with this one."

In response to questions about Ukraine, Fry said: "I'm deeply worried by the darkening shadow that's going over the world, a shadow we have to call fascism... absolutely it's a cult of power and power only speaks to power.

"The worry is the contempt that Trump, as Putin always has, the contempt for British politicians whoever they might be from Macron, we'll see what happens in Germany - they've tried to push the ultra-right party, Vance and others have supported it. It is a real worry - it's a desperate, desperate time."

Just a month into his second presidential term, Trump has attracted significant controversy in recent weeks over how he has handled peace talks with European leaders over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Mirror reports.

Last week, he echoed several of Vladimir Putin's stances, insisting that Zelensky was a "dictator without elections" and that Ukraine was responsible for starting the war.

Analysing Trump's viewpoint, Fry added: "One can use rhetoric to suggest that this is peacemaking, and that all that Donald Trump wants to do is end the war but this is a new world.

"We are talking about a very extraordinary situation now where the bullies who have risen to the top - I've called it fascism because that's what it is - and their total contempt for the old world order.

"You have to remember the psychology of a bully in school. Bullies feast on the fear that they cause - think of Joe Pesci in Goodfellas. Look at who Trump admires... Saudi Arabia, Russia, Turkey, Belarus, India, Israel... places which are basically moving towards fascism, nationalism and they don't listen to people like Starmer."

"It's shouting, it's nasty, it's bullying and it's fascism - and we have to realign ourselves - this is no longer the proper world."
