Strictly's Pete Wicks opens up about 'alcohol dependencies'
Pete Wicks appeared on the Loose Women panel and opened up about his problems with alcohol
Pete Wicks joined the Loose Women panel on Wednesday (February 5) in a special edition of the hit programme fronted by Craig Doyle.
The ITV daytime show switched up it's usual name for Loose Men as it welcomed McFly singer Danny Jones, former TOWIE star Pete Wicks and Diversity star Jordan Banjo to the panel led by This Morning presenter Craig Doyle.
The spin-off show airs throughout the year with an all-male panel highlighting the importance of male mental health struggles.
During the show, they candidly spoke about whether tattoos have a bad reputation and I'm a Celebrity winner Danny Jones discussed his anxiety struggles as well as his close bond with former boxer Barry McGuigan. He shared: "My son turned seven recently and coming out of the jungle, realising that time is precious [and] the only thing we've run out of. I had the relationship with Barry [McGuigan] and he really, really made me appreciate time with your family and my little boy.
"Seeing him open up on the jungle about his daughter, really opened the door for me. Because, seeing this champion of a boxer opening up and seeing this tough, tough guy, that’s fought some of the toughest men on the planet. To see him get so vulnerable, I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I can’ because I didn't know I was going to go on there and be so vulnerable. He's an inspiration to me and like I said, he was like my jungle dad."

The topic then moved onto the question "have you ever been told you drink too much?". Jordan kicked off the conversation and admitted: "I grew up really not around a lot of drinking and it wasn't for me until I hit lockdown. When I went into lockdown, out of nowhere, I started drinking and then it became a daily thing. Once it becomes a habit, it's a hard thing to break."
He continued: "I was like, ‘I'm not drinking anymore at all, because when I started to get to the point where I don't know, I was having dinner with my family, with my wife… [like] ‘I'm just gonna take my plate out to the kitchen’ and I'm secretly topping up, hoping I don't get caught, or I'm up early for radio and I'll say to my wife, ‘Oh, I'm gonna stay in the spare room so I don't wake you up’... and I'm in there having drinks. Genuinely I was, and I was like, ‘What am I doing?’... I'm just sat in bed just drinking at like, half eight at night on my own, hoping I don't get caught."

Pete Wicks then opened up and revealed: "I grew up with family that had alcohol dependencies and I think I would never have considered myself to be someone who had a problem with drinking. But, Strictly really changed my drinking habits. Pre [Strictly] I was a pretty heavy drinker for 15 years, to the point where I'd have a bottle of wine a night, every night, and that's just cooking and chilling out. It was my way of kind of chilling out, until I did Strictly and kind of stopped drinking and realised that actually, all that was doing was kind of numbing parts of my reality."
He added: "It became a habit to the point where I was functioning by just carrying on doing that and it didn't really bother me. I didn't get hangovers and I didn't really get come downs or anything like that. I was just drinking for the sake of drinking but also, it gave me kind of a reason to numb how I was feeling a lot of the time.
"That's what alcohol used to do to me and it was only really through Strictly, and it wasn't a conscious decision, it was just the fact that trying to learn a waltz with a slightly fuzzy head is quite difficult. But, what I've noticed since I've stopped drinking as much, and I still have… I went out with the boys on Saturday night and had a few drinks, but I'm not drinking on a daily basis now… is the clarity that I have in my everyday life. Everything seems to be less fuzzy and a little bit more clear."
Pete later confessed: "I would love to get married and have kids. I'm so, so blessed to do some of the things that I do in my life and what is better than sharing that with someone you love? But, I've just never been in a position, I think, over the years, where I have felt able to do that."
