Mr Murrell, a former chief executive of the SNP, married the ex-first minister in the summer of 2010, while Ms Sturgeon was deputy under Alex Salmond.

The pair first met in 1988 at an SNP youth weekend and became a couple in 2003.

But she announced with a “heavy heart” on Monday that the pair had “decided to end our marriage”.

In an interview with Times Radio on Tuesday, Kezia Dugdale, who is married to SNP education secretary Jenny Gilruth, defended her former political opponent.

Why Sturgeon complained after MSPs granted 'skiving charter'

She said the coverage had been “awful” and urged the public to have “compassion” regardless of their political leanings.

In the interview, Ms Dugdale was asked how sympathetic she felt towards Ms Sturgeon following the announcement.

Despite going head-to-head with Ms Sturgeon over a two year period when they led rival parties, Ms Dugdale said she was “deeply sympathetic” to her former rival.

She told Times Radio: “I will get a lot of crap on social media for saying that, and I say that as someone who was diametrically opposed to her for much of my political life.

“I stood up against her at First Minister’s Questions every week for about two and a half years.

“Yet, this is a deeply personal thing and for it to be played out on the front page of every newspaper in Scotland this morning pretty much, and some of it is awful.

“Some of the coverage in some of the papers is disgusting and awful and very unkind.

When Ms Sturgeon went on to become first minister and SNP leader, Mr Murrell served as the chief executive of the party.

Ms Sturgeon suddenly resigned from the top job in February 2023 after eight years in charge, while Mr Murrell resigned as chief executive in March 2023 after holding the role since 2001.

Former first minister Alex Salmond previously warned the couple of the risks in holding the power of the SNP in one household.

In her social media post, Ms Sturgeon confirmed the split. She said: "With a heavy heart I am confirming that Peter and I have decided to end our marriage.

"To all intents and purposes we have been separated for some time now and feel it is time to bring others up to speed with where we are.

"It goes without saying that we still care deeply for each other, and always will. We will be making no further comment."

The split comes as Operation Branchform, the police probe into  SNP finances, moves towards its fourth year.

Police started investigating in July 2021 after complaints that £660,000 raised by the party explicitly for a second independence referendum campaign was spent on other items.

2023, the house Mr Murrell shared with Ms Sturgeon was raided and searched by detectives.

A luxury campervan, parked in the driveway of the Fife home of Mr Murrell’s elderly mother, was also seized.

Mr Murrell was re-arrested and charged with the alleged embezzlement of party funds last April.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service is still considering the report from Police Scotland and whether to move to trial.

The force had also asked for “advice and guidance” on Ms Sturgeon and the SNP's former treasurer, Colin Beattie, both of whom have been arrested, questioned and released.
