Sum 41's Deryck Whibley Heartbroken Over Missing Final Shows in Australia: "I Did My Best"
With Sum 41 missing shows due to sickness, singer Deryck Whibley offered an apology to fans for not being able to perform.
With Sum 41 spending nearly three decades in the spotlight, the rock band looked to celebrate their legacy and go out with one final tour. Calling it the Tour of the Setting Sum, the concert focused on the band’s rich history and their last album Heaven :x: Hell, which hit shelves back in 2024. While a celebration of the band, Sum 41 hoped to perform a string of shows in Australia. With fans excited to watch the band one last time, singer Deryck Whibley sadly was unable to perform due to sickness. And knowing how much the shows meant to fans, the singer offered his sincerest apologies.
When it came to Sum 41, the band knew how to travel. During most years, the band would perform over 100 shows. As for their tours, the events often lasted more than a year. Not afraid to hit the road, even Whibley couldn’t get past sickness. At the time, the singer insisted, “This is the part that I hate… The fact that we had to miss shows, miss festivals, all I can say is I’m so sorry.”
Sharing details surrounding Whibley’s sickness, the band blamed a case of pneumonia. “It is will deep sadness and regret that we announce our 2024 Australian tour is unable to proceed.”

Not able to make of the shows due to most of them being festivals, Whibley shared full details for those fans who missed them. “In Australia, it was very public. I had pneumonia.” He continued, “I was there, I did my best. I made it there. Unfortunately, we couldn’t move any of those shows because they were festivals. All I can say — and it’s still not enough — but, sincerely, I’m so sorry because we really wanted to play. It really just really fell out of our control and I can’t say sorry enough. But I’m truly sorry.”
With fans rallying around the singer and remembering the legacy of Sum 41, one person insisted, “After not having Sum 41 play a show in Ontario for almost three years, it felt like one big celebration with all the energy rather than an emotional end. Holding our 41 Salutes to the sky forever.”
