A top anal surgeon has issued a health warning about a common post-toilet mistake that may cause serious problems. Proctologist Dr Evan Goldstein has stated that "traditional wiping" with toilet paper can lead to irritation and long-term damage due to the delicate skin of the anus.

According to Dr Goldstein, who spoke on the HuffPost's 'Am I Doing It Wrong?' podcast, even using wet wipes could make things worse.

"They are so terrible - not only for the environment, but for your hole," he remarked. He pointed out that many of these products contain harmful chemicals which might upset the microbial balance in that region.

This leads to several issues such as bacterial infections, skin conditions, exacerbated haemorrhoids, fissures, and fungal growth, reports the Mirror.

Dr Goldstein elaborated on how these wipes interfere with the natural bacterial balance: "'Think about it - we have good bacteria, we have bad bacteria, but they are in homeostasis. They are in equilibrium. Wet wipes f**k that in a really bad way," he said, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. .

"I see ridiculous dermatitis and bacterial infection [in my patients]. Now that they've messed up that microbiome, it's causing so many problems," Dr Goldstein continued.

Instead, Dr Goldstein recommends installing a bidet instead of always using toilet paper, as they're far more gentle and can provide a thorough clean without causing irritation. But, if this isn't an option, you can use the shower for a quick rinse.

If you try this out though, Dr Goldstein cautioned that you should ensure the area is dry afterwards, as too much moisture can cause issues. If you're unable to do either of these, Dr Goldstein suggests blotting instead of wiping and even doing so in a standing position, to reduce the pressure on the area.

This way, the skin around the anus is less taut, minimising irritation and tears for good.

For children and babies, wet wipes might be your only options and to ensure a sensitive and non-irritating experience, make sure to use specifically designed baby or newborn wipes, which typically promise gentle and efficient protection.

Experts say they are fine to use in this case, but it's extremely important to choose brands free of nasties like parabens, phthalates and phenoxyethanol.

Behind the Album: Revisiting The Smashing Pumpkins' 1995 Epic ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ at 30 Years

When The Smashing Pumpkins debuted in 1991 with Gish, they sounded like a Midwest relative to Hollywood’s Jane’s Addiction. Both groups shared a love of 1970s rock and glam. But Billy Corgan and Perry Farrell were two very different characters. Farrell not only liked to party, he also often threw it. Corgan had a different approach. Beneath the thundering riff of “I Am One,” he sings, “Try to look for something in your city to burn.” The hedonism of Jane’s Addiction now had its nihilist cousin.
