Symptoms of skin cancer as Katherine Ryan shares second melanoma diagnosis
The comedian had been given the all clear previously, but has announced that her skin cancer returned in a mole on her arm.
Katherine Ryan has been diagnosed with skin cancer for the second time, which she shared in the most recent episode of aptly named podcast Telling Everybody Everything.
She shared the diagnosis on the podcast, saying: “I've had a mole on my arm - that I told you about last week - removed.

"The only reason that they agreed to remove it was because I went to a fancy private place in South Kensington and I paid them a grand.
“I don't know if on the NHS they ever would have removed this mole.”
The comedian said she’d been to the doctor about the mole and had initially been given the all clear.
She said: “I know you should never google things but I’m actually really worried. Normally I’m that positive person. I think it’s really easy to take a diagnosis of ‘you’re healthy’ and walk away."
She added: "But the mole kept changing, I know a lot about melanoma, I had stage two melanoma as a very young woman - aged 21 - on my leg, I’ve spoken about that before.
"It was flat, it wasn’t that big but it was melanoma. It is a deadly form of skin cancer and it does spread quickly.
"I just thought that this mole wasn’t right. It’s on my arm. I showed pictures of it on my social media. I went in and I wanted the doctor to remove it and stitch it up in a straight line.
"But even when he looked at it, he was like, ‘it’s not melanoma, it’s totally fine, I will do a shave and send it away for testing’."
Katherine said the doctor then called her back and confirmed that it was in fact, melanoma.
But as Katherine Ryan's second skin cancer diagnosis makes headlines, what are some of its symptoms? Here's everything you need to know about this sometimes-deadly form of cancer.
The NHS lists several symptoms of skin cancer, including signs of melanoma, which is a specific type of the disease. There are different symptoms for different types of skin cancer, as well as some general signs to look out for.
There are some general signs to keep an eye out for that could indicate skin cancer. These include:
New or unusual spots, lumps, or blemishes on the skin that don't heal or that change in size, shape, or colour
A sore that doesn't heal within four weeks
A growth that bleeds, itches, crusts, or scabs for more than four weeks
Areas of skin that are red, swollen, scaly, or crusty
Skin that feels itchy, tender, or painful
New moles or changes in existing moles can indicate melanoma. These changes can include a mole that is:
Getting bigger, changing shape, or changing colour
Bleeding or becoming crusty
Itchy or painful
Getting bigger, changing shape, or changing colour
Itchy or painful
Moles that are asymmetrical, have irregular borders, or have areas of different colours are also worth watching out for, as well as moles that are larger than 6mm (1/4 inch) in diameter.
Other types of skin cancer, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, include:
Lumps or discoloured patches on the skin that persist after a few weeks
Flat, scaly, or crusty patches
Firm, red lumps that sometimes turn into ulcers
Open sores that don't heal, or heal and then come back
Small, shiny, or pearly bumps
Raised patches that may itch
If you notice any of the above symptoms, it's important to keep an eye on them. You should see your GP if:
You have any skin abnormality that doesn't heal after four weeks
You notice any changes in a mole, freckle, or patch of skin, especially if the changes happen over a few weeks or months
You have any concerns about a spot, sore, or growth on your skin
