T.O.P "I Was Not in My Right Mind on SNS, Sorry to BIGBANG Members and Fans"
Former BIGBANG member-actor Choi Seung-hyun (T.O.P) issued an apology to BIGBANG members and their fandom VIP
During an interview for Netflixâs series âSquid Gameâ Season 2 on January 15 at a cafĂ© in Jongno-gu, Seoul, Choi Seung-hyun opened up about his regrets. He shared, âDue to my mistakes, I deeply hurt and disappointed my beloved family and caused harm to the BIGBANG members. While I enjoyed immense glory and love in my twenties, the fall and subsequent collapse were experiences unlike anything Iâd faced before. Those were pitch-black times. I was utterly broken, and I lacked the strength to get back up, leading me to want to give up on everything.â
Reflecting on his behavior, he continued, âIt pained me to see fans waiting for our comeback. Social media was my only outlet for communication, but I was in such a dark place at the time that I acted rashly and lacked judgment. I deeply regret the foolish words I said and feel ashamed. I was not in my right mind. I regret my actions and will reflect on them for the rest of my life.â
In July 2017, Choi Seung-hyun received a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, for marijuana use. Declared unfit for active duty, he was discharged from his conscripted police service and completed his alternative service as a public service worker. Following these events, he avoided significant entertainment activities, instead remaining active on social media.
In 2019, when a netizen left a comment on SNS saying âReflect on yourself. Donât use SNS. Donât come backâ, Choi Seung-hyun directly replied, âYes! I have no intention of doing so. Just look at animal pictures.â In 2020, during a live broadcast, he remarked, âI wonât make a comeback in Korea. I donât want to return at all. And please stop writing articles about me. People are too cruel. I wish they had more love.â
Choi Seung-hyun later ventured into wine businesses and joined a private lunar expedition project, distancing himself from the entertainment industry. In May 2023, he officially announced his departure from BIGBANG, saying, âI already shared my decision to leave. Since last year, Iâve been facing a new chapter in my life.â He even marked a symbolic âXâ over the word âBIGBANGâ in a captured image of an article referring to him as âBIGBANG T.O.Pâ, clearly delineating his separation.
AdvertisementDuring the interview, Choi Seung-hyun reaffirmed his decision to leave BIGBANG, apologizing for the damage his actions caused to the group and YG Entertainment. He said, âI brought great harm to the team and the agency. Years ago, I decided to leave to prevent further harm. I have to bear the consequences of my actions on my own. Rejoining the group would only attach the stigma of my mistakes to the other members. Itâs something I couldnât bear, so I decided to leave.â
When asked if the other members tried to dissuade him from leaving, Choi Seung-hyun hesitated, saying, âItâs hard for me to comment on that. I think it would be inappropriate to speak for the members or anyone not present here.â He also admitted that he has not kept in touch with the other members, citing his overwhelming feelings of guilt and shame.

AdvertisementRegarding his controversial social media interactions, Choi Seung-hyun explained, âSome of the comments came from malicious commenters, not fans. I was in a very dark place at the time and acted recklessly. Itâs something I deeply regret even now.â
