Taoiseach Micheál Martin has received an official invitation from US President Donald Trump to celebrate St. Patrickâs Day in the White House in Washington DC next month.
In a statement issued on Friday morning, a spokesperson for the Taoiseach said: âThe Taoiseach is pleased to have received an invitation from President Trump to visit the White House to celebrate St. Patrickâs Day on 12 March.
âHe is delighted to accept and looks forward to meeting the President.
âThe Embassy in Washington will continue to engage with the White House team on the details of our visit.â
While waiting for the invitation to arrive, the Taoiseach had previously said he would articulate Irelandâs support for a two-State solution if granted an audience with President Trump.
âIreland has a strong record in supporting the Palestinian right to a homeland,â he said.
Amid calls for a White House boycott this year and a Sinn Féin announcement that the party would be doing so, Martin had said: âThe relationship with the United States is not about any one president, itâs been a long-standing one. Itâs older than this State itself. Itâs fraternal.
âThe economic relationship is a powerful relationship, which we cannot ignore. And then thereâs cultural and strong family connections as well.â
Mr Martin added: âIrish companies have created about 100,000 jobs in America, we export a lot to America. And we have a lot of US multinationals who employ around 200,000 people in Ireland.â
