Mike Peters, the frontman of Welsh rock band The Alarm, has died aged 66.
Peters had battled blood cancer numerous times since 1995 and, as a result of his health issues, had become a prolific campaigner for the cause, founding the charity Love Hope Strength with his wife Jules to raise awareness of the illness through rock music.
The charity announced his death on April 29th through a simple video titled, ‘Michael Peters: 1959 – 2025.’
Peters formed The Alarm in 1981 in the Rhyl area of Denbighshire and went on to have a hit with their single ‘Six Eighty Guns’ two years later.
Most notably, the band became the first Welsh artist since Tom Jones and Bonnie Tyler, some years prior, to form a successful career in the United States, selling more than five million records on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Alarm’s debut album Declaration was released in 1984 and climbed to number six in the UK charts. They disbanded in the early 1990s, before Peters reformed the outfit with a change of members for a period of time in the 2000s.
Much of the band’s sound was defined in anthemic qualities reflected in counterpart bands like U2, and this spirit helped Peters to campaign both in his local community and across the country during his cancer battles.
In a health update last year, Peters revealed his cancer had returned: “Cancer has been chasing me for 29 years now, and in all that time, I have managed to outrun the disease and stay alive. My focus and resolve remain the same, and I’m determined to keep running even harder to stay one step ahead and resume my life as a husband, father, and musician as soon as possible.”
The singer was forced to pull out of an extensive US tour in April last year after his cancer relapsed into an aggressive form of lymphoma. He had been undergoing treatment at The Christie Cancer Hospital in Manchester, which he documented in blog posts on the Love Hope Strength charity website.
Peters was awarded an MBE in 2019 for his services to cancer care.
