The Electric State ending explained: Do the humans defeat the robots?

The Electric State is a new Netflix movie that sees Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt teaming up to take down an army of robots. Here’s how that plays out.
The most expensive Netflix movie ever, The Electric State is directed by Marvel‘s main men the Russo brothers, and takes place in an alternate 1990s where robots have waged war against humans, then been defeated, and banished to an exclusion zone. Still, the tech that takes their place comes at a terrible cost.
The movie hit Netflix today, and we wrote in our Electric State review that the film is: “a sci-fi action-adventure that tells a big story on a huge scale, but while that ambition is to be applauded, the human story at the movie’s heart fails to connect.”

Man vs Machines vs Millie Bobby BrownNetflixThe Electric State is a quest movie that turns into a road movie before ending as a war movie. Much of the conflict is due to the actions of Ethan Skate (Stanley Tucci), a tech billionaire using the brilliant brain of a teenage boy called Christopher to power his ‘Neurocaster’ network.
Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown) is Chris’s sister, who’d been told her brother was dead, and the quest in question concerns her efforts to free him. She does this by teaming up with black marketeer Keats (Chris Pratt) and scores of those banished ‘bots.
The story builds to an action-packed climax at Skate’s SENTRE HQ, where the robots battle drones, while Michelle endeavours to rescue her bro. But Chris has come to a shocking conclusion – that he needs to die for the Neurocaster network to fail. Worse still, his sister needs to be the one to pull the plug.

Heroes who make the ultimate sacrificeNetflixMichelle initially refuses the request, but sees that the future of humanity depends on Chris’s death, so they say a tearful goodbye, and she puts her brother out of his misery. In a flash, the drones go down, and the battle is won.
The end of SENTRE brings the world to a standstill, with chaos reigning. But it also results in people going offline, and heading outside to touch grass. While Skate himself is brought to justice, being arrested when footage leaks of his company experimenting on Chris.
Michelle records a video explaining what’s happened, and advising everyone to forget about tech and live in the real world. “We’re starting over,” she exclaims, “and we’re going to do it right this time. Together.”
The movie then ends with Christopher’s robotic counterpart appearing in a reflection in a puddle, suggesting that once again, he might not be as dead as Michelle thought. Potentially setting up a future story for the siblings.
