The Late Kim Sae-ron & Kim Soo-hyun: Was It Love or Just Wealth?
Kim Sae-ron’s aunt told Garo Sero that the family strongly opposed her relationship with Kim Soo-hyun, addressing criticism over their alleged inaction.
On March 17, Garo Sero Research Institute released a video titled “Kim Sae-ron’s Aunt: ‘Who Helped Us If Not Gaseyeon?'” The video featured a phone interview conducted by Garo Sero’s representative, Kim Se-ui, with Kim Sae-ron’s aunt, referred to as “A.”
Kwon Young-chan, the director of the Korea Association for Celebrities Suicide Prevention, had previously described A as being “like a real mother, even closer than Kim Sae-ron’s actual mother.” He explained that Kim Sae-ron frequently turned to her aunt for advice and confided in her to avoid burdening her parents.
During the interview, Kim Se-ui questioned A about the family’s response to Kim Sae-ron’s alleged relationship with actor Kim Soo-hyun, particularly when she was still a minor. He asked, “If Kim Sae-ron had been dating Kim Soo-hyun since middle school, shouldn’t the family have stopped it? What were they doing?” He further probed, “To be honest, didn’t you just not know about it at the time?”
A responded, “Of course, we didn’t know. Actors can meet on set and keep in touch, after all. One day, before he enlisted in the military, they kept exchanging messages, and he even sent military photos. That’s when I started feeling something was off and found out. We were strongly against it.”
Kim Se-ui then commented, “This is why people see it as a crime. An adult continuously gaslighting a minor, doesn’t it seem like she was manipulated? At first, she didn’t even like Kim Soo-hyun, but he kept approaching her. Didn’t Kim Sae-ron tell her parents about this?”

A confirmed, “Yes, she told them. Do you think she went up to her parents and said, ‘Mom, I have a boyfriend?’ No, she probably said, ‘It’s strange that he keeps sending personal photos.’ When we found out, we tried to stop it. But when Sae-ron said, ‘Stop playing with a kid,’ Kim Soo-hyun responded, ‘I sincerely care for you. I mean it.’ Later, he even promised to support her when she went to her company. She wasn’t unaware of the age gap. That’s why we told him to stop messing around. But he kept insisting it was serious. He even promised to support her career when she signed with her agency.”
A further revealed, “They even discussed marriage, but that was after she became an adult.”

Expressing her frustration, A stated, “I don’t want to go into every little detail. If people want the truth, the law should decide. People say, ‘Why didn’t the parents oppose it?’ Do you think they wouldn’t? Do you think we were happy just because he was successful and rich? Who had the brighter future ahead, her, or him, who was over ten years older?”

Previously, on March 10, Kim Sae-ron’s family had claimed through Garo Sero that Kim Soo-hyun had been in a relationship with Kim Sae-ron from the time she was 15 until she was 21 (from 2015 to 2021). They also released photos of Kim Soo-hyun kissing Kim Sae-ron on the cheek and a handwritten letter allegedly sent by him during his military service.
Initially, Kim Soo-hyun’s agency, Gold Medalist, denied the allegations, calling them “completely false” and threatening legal action. However, on March 14, the agency revised its stance, stating, “Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Sae-ron dated from the summer of 2019 to the fall of 2020, after she became an adult. The claim that Kim Soo-hyun dated her while she was a minor is false.”
In response to the growing controversy, on March 17, Kim Sae-ron’s family filed a defamation lawsuit against entertainment journalist-turned-YouTuber Lee Jin-ho with the Seoul Metropolitan Police, accusing him of spreading false information. They also announced plans to take legal action against Kim Soo-hyun’s agency, Gold Medalist.
