The North East village church with a 'fascinating' crypt among Britain's finest
Find out why the village church of St Aidan’s in Bamburgh has been revealed among the finest in Britain to visit, according to The Telegraph.
The Telegraph praised St Aidan’s in Bamburgh, Northumberland for its “fascinating” crypt which was found to have the bones of more than 100 "souls" from the village.
Introducing its guide to the best village churches, The Telegraph wrote: “The Church of England reckons that 35 to 50 million people visit churches each year as tourists; on average, a parish church might expect between 700 and 4,000. But it should be more. Because nothing tells the story of a village like its church.
“These often ancient buildings go far beyond worship. They are keepers of folklore, galleries of master craftsmanship, records of births, deaths and upheavals. There is always something interesting to be found.”

The publisher explained: “The village of Bamburgh has a lot going for it: a colossal crag-top castle, the RNLI Grace Darling Museum, one of the country’s most beautiful sandy beaches.
“It also has a magnificent church, with over a millennia of history. St Aidan (founder of Lindisfarne) established a church here in AD 635.
“The current building, dating from the 12th century, contains St Aidan’s Shrine and a forked beam that, according to legend, he was leaning against when he died.
“Also fascinating is the crypt, which holds the reinterred bones of more than 100 Bamburgh souls, found when a storm uncovered a 1,400-year-old Christian cemetery.”
