The Time George Strait Sent off a Record-Setting Crowd at Dallas Cowboys Stadium With a Masterful Rendition of “The Cowboy Rides Away”
With George Strait a legend in country music, here is a throwback performance of the hitmaker performing "The Cowboy Rides Away"
While each passing decade often brings a new lineup of aspiring singers looking to make a name for themselves in country music, stars like George Strait appeared timeless to the genre. With no act or gimmick, Strait started his career by sharing his love for country music. And during that time – he became country music. Selling over 120 million albums and holding several No. 1 hits, Strait received the title of “King of Country Music.” And although he still performs and releases new music, here is a special throwback performance of Strait performing “The Cowboy Rides Away.”
Back in 2014, Strait traveled the country for his The Cowboy Rides Away Tour. For any fan of the singer, they knew he usually closed out his concert with the 1985 hit “The Cowboy Rides Away.” And when it came to performing in front of over 104,000 people in Arlington, Texas, at AT&T Stadium (home of the Dallas Cowboys) he kept to the same format. Setting a worldwide record at the time, Strait seemed at ease when singing the hit about a cowboy riding away from failed love.
At the time, the 104,793 people in attendance marked one of the largest ever single-show attendance at a stadium located in the United States. That number was eventually overtaken by Strait himself, who in 2024, set the record for the largest attendance at a U.S. ticketed concert with 110,905 fans.
With a decade passing since the performance, the video of Strait singing “The Cowboy Rides Away” continues to gain praise. Looking at the comments, fans wrote, “Here is “THE MAN ” the king of country. The cowboy and I would love to ride with him on a horse. My favorite country singer and one day I will meet him real soon. You will see. One great song cowboy.” The praise continued with one person adding, “Love you Georgie️. You’re the best when it comes to country music!! God bless you for bringing your awesome music to all of your fans!!!”

Speaking of fans, they are known for showing their love for certain singers in unusual ways. And although a singer himself, Koe Wetzel once revealed he got “Amarillo By Morning” tattooed on his buttocks. “We were down in Destin, Florida partying one night and this dude comes up just like, ‘Hey man I’m a huge fan, I wanna tattoo you.’ And I was like, ‘Alright.’ He had a bunch of good lookin’ girls with him though, so I was like, ‘Hell yeah.’”

While a special memory, Wetzel insisted, “He pulls out his kit and he starts tattooing. I said I want ‘Slow Women and Fast Horses.’ After he got done with Slow I was like, ‘Dude you don’t have a whole lotta room to work with. It’s getting a little late, so let’s just put Fast right underneath it.’ Kinda one of those nights I wish I wouldn’t have drank so much whiskey.”
