The Top 100 restaurants in the UK revealed - and four are in Greater Manchester
The 2025 guide also includes a new Manchester restaurant in the top 10
SquareMeal has unveiled its UK Top 100 restaurants list - and four venues in Greater Manchester have made the cut. The 2025 guide also includes a new Manchester restaurant in the top 10, which has been highlighted as this year's highest new entry.
The UK’s leading independent restaurant guide is the only list of its kind to exclude London’s restaurants and uses a combination of thousands of reader votes and SquareMeal’s own expert critics, to serve up the top 100. Topping the list is Restaurant Sat Bains in Nottingham, the two-Michelin-Star restaurant with rooms that has been running for over 25 years.
This year's highest new entry in the UK Top 100 is chef Tom Barnes' Manchester restaurant Skof, which has landed in number eight. Also flying the flag for the city are the critically acclaimed Higher Ground, Another Hand, and The Sparrows.
The independent restaurant guide's annual listing is created using reader votes and reviews from its own critics. Elsewhere in the UK. Birmingham is leading the way with five restaurants in the list, including two in the top 10 in 2022 champion Grace & Savour, and two Michelin-starred Opheem.
The new restaurant, located in the NOMA district of Manchester, comes from acclaimed chef Tom Barnes (Image: Cristian Barnett)Other 'powerhouse culinary counties' like North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Berkshire are also well represented, but fifteen counties are represented across the whole list, showing that there are a variety of great restaurants spread across the UK. A special mention also goes to this year's highest riser, Kevin Tickle's Heft in Cumbria, which has jumped 54 spots from 72 last year to 18 in 2025.
Commenting on the list and this year's top restaurant, SquareMeal’s Managing Editor, Ellie Donnell says: "It feels extraordinarily telling that Sat Bains' eponymous two Michelin-starred restaurant has been trading for 25 years. The UK's dining scene becomes more competitive by the year, so for the team to be celebrating a quarter of a century pays testament to its enduring relevance.

A huge congratulations to the team!”
The highest charting restaurant for Manchester, Skof opened last May to huge fanfare and has been widely praised by local and national food critics. Based in a historic former drapery in the Hanover Building, Skof has been brought to life by chef Tom Barnes, who earned his stripes working as executive chef at the three-Michelin-starred L'Enclume in Cumbria alongside esteemed chef Simon Rogan.
Located in the NOMA area, the dining concept is centred around modern British dining with a twist. The restaurant serves 12 course or 16 course tasting menus for £120 or £165 in the evenings, or there is also a £50 lunch option.
Chef Joe Otway of Higher Ground in Manchester (Image: Manchester Evening News)Each menu is guided by seasonality, locality and the best possible produce, and Tom and the team work closely with small-scale suppliers including Cinderwood Market Garden and Lake District Farmers to bring the best produce to people’s plates. Earlier this month, Skof was also shortlisted as one of the contenders for a top gong at The Good Food Guide Awards 2025.
Also representing Manchester is Another Hand, the casual neighbourhood eatery loved by the Michelin Guide inspectors and tucked away on Deansgate Mews. Similarly, there's top dining spot Higher Ground, which is run by Daniel Craig-Martin, Richard Cossins and Joe Otway, ands celebrates ‘regenerative farming and local produce.
Completing the pack, there's The Sparrows, the much-loved city centre spot hidden away under railways arches. Nestled away in the Green Quarter, the much-loved restaurant serves up a variety of European delicacies including house speciality, Spätzle, which translates as 'sparrow', a type of European dumpling popular in South Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
