The Traitors fan favourite admits 'it's hard to accept' as close friend dies

The Traitors star Maddy Smedley has shared an emotional post opening up about a tragic loss.
The 32-year-old actress, who has also appeared on EastEnders and Hollyoaks, was on the first series of The Traitors back in 2022, and won over fans for being Faithful from the beginning. Unfortunately, she revealed today on X, formerly known as Twitter, that she is currently grieving the loss of a friend.
âRIP my friend Sue who I used to work with @ hello fresh. She was kind, supportive an funny. Itâs been hard to accept [crying emoji] Made me wonder about grandad too n where they all go? I thought wonder if they bump into each other and sue offers grandad a box. Made me laugh thinking about it,â she wrote.
One fan responded: âSorry to hear of your loss, lovely. Cherish the happy memories and the good times that you shared with your friend.â
The star wondered if her late friend would meet her granddad - who died just a week after she left the BBC showIn her post, Maddy spoke of the death of her granddad, Dennis Smedley, who passed away aged 86 soon after she was banished from the BBC show. Maddy shared that being voted out ended up working well as it gave her a chance to say goodbye. "My exit in the stage before the final was a blessing in disguise. My granddad passed away a week after I arrived back from filming,â she previously told Hull Live.
"If I would have gone through to the end I wouldnât have seen him before he died. And nothing would have been worth losing that time with him. Grandad was my hero and although he had dementia he was happy for me when I told him I was going to be on the TV."
After leaving the show Maddy returned to her part-time job as a receptionist at care home Birchwood Heights - where her grandad was living. She revealed that residents at the home even held a Champagne premiere to support her when she went off to the Scottish Highlands to film The Traitors.
Despite having experience as an actress, Maddy shared that leaving the care home to go on the back-stabbing show was a shock to the system. Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, she admitted: "Yeah, I think it was very intense. I think everyone threw themselves into it.
"So I realised I'm more of a method actor cause I felt like I was on death row, but then I think everything's heightened. So even you as a person, you're like, who was that? Or did I say that? And then each time I was like, oh my God. Very intense."
The intensity of filming The Traitors may have helped in the long run, as Maddyâs acting career has gone from strength to strength after leaving the show. She was a guest star in Call the Midwife last Christmas, playing a pregnant, poverty-stricken mother whose family is evicted from their home just as their neighbourhood is gripped by Hong Kong flu - and fans were overjoyed to see her back on their screens.
