The actor who felt awkward trying to seduce Tom Hanks
'America's Dad' isn't exactly viewed as a sexual being, so it's understandable that trying to seduce Tom Hanks would be an awkward experience for an actor.

With the greatest of respect to Tom Hanks, undoubtedly one of the modern era’s most popular and talented actors, nobody really views him as a sexual being.
Unlike many movie stars past and present, the two-time Academy Award winner has never been treated as a heartthrob, sex symbol, or object of desire. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, especially when that affable everyman charm has been a key part of his appeal since the 1980s.
Hanks is the kind of guy you’d bring home to meet your parents, confident in the knowledge that they’d instantly approve. Conversely, he’s not the type of performer who’s going to use sex appeal to lure a captive audience to the cinema to check out his latest work, not that it’s required for a famously genial fellow who wears the moniker of ‘America’s Dad’ like a badge of honour.
However, sometimes movies require sex scenes, and if that sex scene requires Hanks, then somebody is going to have to seduce him. Bumping uglies on the big screen isn’t an act he indulges in all that often, especially with people over a quarter of a century his junior. When he played one of his many real-life figures in Charlie Wilson’s War, though, it was written in the script.
It’s probably not the right word, but the honour of luring Hanks’ title character into bed while scantily clad and puffing on a joint fell to Emily Blunt. It would be awkward enough for anyone who’d grown up watching his films to suddenly find themselves tasked with convincingly sensually crawling over him, but her reservations went beyond the fact she “could be his daughter.”
“I’m friends with his son. I did Buck Howard with Colin,” Blunt exclaimed to GQ before elaborating on the awkwardness of seducing a living legend. “And also because Tom Hanks is not known for these kind of scenes, for being that guy. And Charlie Wilson was a massive player, he was really promiscuous. And sexy. Tom was so really good at that. He’s really sexy.”
Is Tom Hanks sexy? Blunt seems to think so, although it remains open for debate. He seems too wholesome even to be considered a source of objectification, but each is their own. That said, only in Hollywood or possibly on Jerry Springer would you find a scenario where an actor strikes up a friendship with one of their colleagues in the knowledge they’d very recently seduced their father.
That was the unusual situation Blunt found herself in, with her work opposite Colin in The Great Buck Howard releasing less than three months after her saucy exchange with Tom in Charlie Wilson’s War. Hanks Sr produced and played a small role in the latter, too, which could have made things even more awkward.
