It's not often that actors playing Bond are considered 'too handsome' for the role, however, Pierce Brosnan reckons his younger 007 might have been just that.

The role of James Bond is a coveted one in Hollywood, with the tall, dark and handsome archetype subjecting many actors, both potential and cast, to scrutiny over their adherence to the ârulesâ. The casting of Daniel Craig was famously controversial due to his blond hair and his shorter stature than previous Bonds. However, itâs not often that an actor has been considered âtoo handsomeâ for the role.
However, while considered more closely aligned with the Bond stereotype, Craigâs predecessor, Pierce Brosnan, is often considered too âprettyâ for the role. An opinion the actor himself seems to agree with. Speaking to Phase9.tv after the release of his final Bond film, Die Another Day, Brosnan said, âAgain, I have been very fortunate that I did not get Bond when I was supposed to get it. I was too young. My features were too handsome, too good-looking â call it what you will.â
While Brosnan ended up starring in four films in the franchise, he initially lost out on the role after the announcement of his casting ended up reviving the dying Remington Steele, to which he was contractually obliged to return. So, instead of becoming Bond directly after Roger Moore in 1986, he didnât pick up the role until 1994. But Brosnan seems somewhat happy with this turn of events, as he feels he was just too young and too handsome for the role.
While he was accepted into the fold much more seamlessly than his successor, Brosnan was up against the more ruggedly handsome previous Bond actors, like the iconic Sean Connery. Coming to Bond too young and handsome, Brosnan might have faced more criticism for his looks. And while many of us might roll our eyes at someone complaining about their handsomeness, itâs clearly an issue that Brosnan grapples with, âI always used to think that if I was about a foot shorter, I would be more talented and if I had a broken nose I would be really talented.â
Regardless of his accolades, the worry about getting pigeonholed for your looks seems to run both ways in Hollywood, and a franchise like 007 seems to make even the most good-looking Hollywood men spiral into a spiral.
Brosnan stayed lighthearted about the matter, knowing that complaining about your good looks probably wonât get you very far with the public, âSome guy will read this and say âIâll give you a broken nose if you wantâ.â However, Brosnan isnât entirely wrong in his belief that he might have been too handsome, as many Bond fans still believe he was slightly too classically good-looking. So, while losing out on something due to contractual obligations must be difficult, sometimes itâs a gift in disguise to be given a few years to mature.
But, his relief at getting to the role at a later age was just as much about the acting as it was his looks. While his performances as Bond received mixed reviews, he was credited with bringing more nuance and emotion to the role, which the actor himself knows he was able to do due to being a bit older. âIâm sure if someone were to dig out that screen test that I did in 1986, they would just howl,â he explained. âSo it did come at the right time when there was a little bit of gravitas to the soul and the heart.â
