The huge concert with a jaw-dropping line-up that was put together in weeks
In 2005, three men came together in an attempt to put on the biggest fundraising concert in Cardiff since Live Aid in just three weeks
Wednesday, January 22, marks 20 years since 66,000 fans crammed inside Cardiff's iconic Millennium Stadium to watch the UK's biggest acts perform and raise money for a relief fund. But the event very nearly didn't happen.
It came just a few weeks after one of the deadliest ever natural disasters hit Asia. On Boxing Day, 2004, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1 struck off the coast of Indonesia, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people and displaced thousands as entire communities were swept away in the devastation.
It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history, with 14 countries around the Indian Ocean basin impacted with all in need of international aid. Determined to help those affected by the disaster, three men came together in an attempt to put on the biggest fundraising concert in Cardiff since Live Aid in just three weeks.
The three men were Paul Sergeant, the Millennium Stadium CEO between 2003 and 2006, Rupert Moon, the commercial director of Millennium Stadium between 2003 and 2007, and promoter Pablo Janczur. In a two-part special on the BBC - The Impossible Show: Tsunami Relief Concert - viewers will get to see a behind-the-scenes view of what happened ahead of the concert.
The team got in contact with many stars in an attempt to book them as their headline acts, but many were taking a break from touring at the time. The likes of Katherine Jenkins, Goldie Lookin' Chain, Feeder and Charlotte Church signed up to perform, but the concert was still in need of a big headline act.
A mere 14 days before the concert, with questions on whether the event would get the go ahead or not, the team were able to find a headline act - Eric Clapton. Tickets went on sale the next day and were sold out in a matter of three days. Then, more artists, who wanted to help, called in to take part in the concert - Craig David, Lemar, Keane, Manic Street Preachers, Kelly Jones of Stereophonics, Lulu and Jools Holland.
The seven-hour event took place on January 22, 2025, with radio DJ Huw Stephens recalling on the BBC programme: "It was massive, I mean, this was a gig on a scale that Cardiff and Wales had never seen in the stadium, with that massive lineup."
The Tsunami Relief Cardiff raised £1,248,963 in total. During the BBC programme, Katherine Jenkins said: "I think what I’m most proud of is that, that happened in Wales, that was put on with a lot of Welsh hwyl, with a huge amount of Welsh support and I think it went on to show the size of people's hearts."
With that in mind, we've taken a look at the best photos of this historic concert, which happened two decades ago. Were you there? Share your memories in the comment section below.
The Impossible Show: Tsunami Relief Concert will be aired at 8pm on Wednesday, January 22 on BBC Cymru Wales and BBC iPlayer.
