While some child stars fade into obscurity, Ariana Grande made sure from an early age that she would always remain in the spotlight. She began as a theatre actor, quickly making her way to Broadway, where she performed in the musical 13. From there, Grande established herself as a multi-talented artist, dividing her time between Nickelodeon television shows and her own music.
Victorious was Grandeâs first proper television role, a popular show aimed at kids and young teens. She played Cat Valentine, a red-headed student at the fictional Hollywood Arts High School who wasnât the brightest of the bunch. Known for her unforgettable laugh and distinctive vocal cadence, the character became a fan favourite, and she subsequently reprised the role in Sam & Cat, a spin-off also featuring Jennette McCurdyâs character from iCarly.
Around this time, she shared her debut album, Yours Truly, which was highly acclaimed upon its release. It garnered a legion of fans and asserted Grande as a lot more than just a Nickelodeon star hoping to forge a music career â something that made her stand out from many of her contemporaries. Before long, Grande was known as one of the most successful pop artists of the 2010s, and her second album, My Everything, only cemented this further.
2014 was a massive year for Grande, who completely sidestepped acting from this point to fully concentrate on her music career. Five more albums have followed since, including Dangerous Woman, Thank U, Next, and most recently, Eternal Sunshine.
However, it seems Grande has returned to her roots with her latest endeavour, fulfilling a life-long dream of playing Glinda in a movie adaptation of Wicked. Starring alongside Cynthia Erivo, Grandeâs turn as critics praised Glinda, and she even earned a Golden Globe nomination. The press tour, on the other hand, saw Grande and Erivo become the subject of many memes due to the repeated instances of the pair crying during interviews, often holding each otherâs fingers in the process.
It seems that Grande is an emotional person, and in an interview with W Magazine, she admitted, âI cry at everything.â In this case, she was referring to a movie that makes her shed tears without fail, although itâs a choice that you might not expect. Grandeâs pick for the movie that makes her cry wasnât a grand emotional epic or a moving indie drama â it was an Adam Sandler movie.
âThe Waterboy, with Adam Sandler, makes me cry. When theyâre mean to Bobby Boucher, I cry. I donât like it. I love Bobby Boucher. He says, âWould you please still be my friend?â and I lose it,â she explained. To be fair to Grande, The Waterboy is perhaps one of Sandlerâs more moving comedies, although itâs not one that received much acclaim upon its release.
Sandler played Bobby Boucher â a shy man with a stutter â in the film. However, after becoming a terrible football teamâs waterboy, he is given a chance to join the squad, which leads them to unexpected success. Bobby learns to stand up to his bullies and even reunites with a former love interest, resulting in an unsurprising happy ending. While it performed well at the box office, Sandler unfortunately earned a Golden Raspberry âWorst Actorâ nomination.
