Nicole Kidman is one of the most fearless creatives working today, with an unwavering sense of grit and vulnerability that ripples throughout her performances, leading to some of the most crucial contributions to modern cinema. Whether it be her breath-taking performance in Birth, the shocking cruelty of Dogville or the surrealist madness of Eyes Wide Shut, the actor has never failed to surprise audiences and take the road less travelled, being led by an eternal sense of curiosity when selecting her projects, regardless of the challenges they might bring. But after working with a host of groundbreaking directors, Kidman has listed the one project and character she would most like to revisit.
After starting in the industry at just the age of 14, Kidman then evolved into one of the most formidable forces in Hollywood, producing and carefully curating her teams as she aligns herself with exciting new directors and emerging talent. Out of all the people in the industry, Kidman seems to be one of the few that is using her power for good by using it to uplift other women and even out the glaring gender divide amongst directors.
She recently worked with the infamous Danish auteur Susanne Bier, with the director branching out from her usual low-budget style to the grandeurs of a Netflix production. As well as this, she starred in the bold new erotic thriller Babygirl from Halina Reijn, which you know is a success based on the scathing comments from Paul Schrader on Letterboxd as he angrily proclaims about how different the film would be if made by a man. Not shit Schrader, that’s kind of the point!
However, while she has played many differing leading roles in recent years, one of her earlier successes came from her portrayal of Grace in Alejandro Amenábar’s The Others, which is a sinister horror film about a woman living in an isolated house with her children, who both have extreme sensitivities to light and cannot go outside. However, as the plot begins to unravel, we see that everything is not as it seems, and Grace is plagued by a supernatural presence.
The movie has been praised for having one of the most shocking plot twists of all time, with the ending leaving you with every hair on your neck raised as the director flips the conventions of the genre, creating a sudden and disturbing ending. When describing this role, Kidman said, “Actually, the character I would love to go back to is the character in The Others, Grace. Because I feel like The Others gets overlooked, and I loved that character”.
While The Others may have received less critical acclaim compared to her other performances in films such as Moulin Rouge and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, it is widely loved within the horror community and is remembered for subverting the genre in a completely unexpected way, creating a uniquely terrifying tale.
Kidman hasn’t starred in a horror film for many years, but she certainly has many tricks up her sleeves, and perhaps we could expect this from her in her catalogue of unexpected stories.
