As much as we all love Jeff Bridges, he has been in some truly shocking films.
The utterly abysmal RIPD, in which he starred alongside Ryan Reynolds, would have destroyed the career of a lesser performer. There’s also the diabolical fantasy adventure Seventh Son, the 1970s King Kong remake, and the porn ‘comedy’ The Amateur. It’s a shame to focus on the negatives of such a vibrant and thrilling career, but these things happen.
Another shocker in Bridges’ back catalogue is the 2014 sci-fi drama The Giver. Based on Lois Lowry’s novel of the same name, the film is set in a dystopian world where emotions have been eliminated from the human condition. Brenton Thwaites and Odeya Rush star as two teenagers who learn about the highs and lows of the ‘real world’ from a powerful empath played by Bridges.
The actor’s history with the story began years before the film came out. A fan of the book, Bridges initially pitched to direct The Giver in the mid-1990s, with his father Lloyd in the titular role. A script was written in 1998, but Lloyd’s death that same year put a stopper to any plans. The project lingered in purgatory until The Weinstein Company bought the rights in 2007. They would serve as the eventual distributors for the film, with Bridges acting as a producer.
“It was tough for me when I wanted to direct it myself,” Bridges told Rama’s Screen while promoting the film. “I had a certain vision about how it would go; I was in love with the book, I really wanted to put the book up on the screen exactly how it was, and then as I got closer to the movie actually going to be made, I had a decision whether I was going to come on board, play The Giver, or I was just going to say ‘Bon Voyage guys, best of luck, I’m not going to join you’, and I thought about that”.
Adding, “Often, when I come to those crossroads in my life, I try to project myself into the future and think, ‘How am I going to feel if I let this one go?’ and I just felt terrible, so I decided to do an experiment on myself and just go for it and dance with the universe and look at all this different.”
The director of The Giver was Phillip Noyce, an Australian filmmaker who had previously made The Bone Collector, Rabbit-Proof Fence, and Salt. Even though he had taken a step back, Bridges still had some say over the movie’s outcome and was still able to express his worries. “One of the things I was most concerned about was the age of Brenton and Odeya’s characters,” he revealed. “I struggled to let that go, but I finally did, and when these guys showed up, I said, ‘Oh, I’m glad I let that go’… I think it worked really well.”
Bridges must have been upset that he wasn’t able to follow in the footsteps of his hero, Martin Scorsese, and direct The Giver, but with the power of hindsight, he actually dodged a major bullet. These days, the movie is only known for its rare acting appearance from Taylor Swift. Another potential career-killer successfully dodged by Bridges, but perhaps if he had been in charge of the movie, it would be remembered a lot more fondly.
