Wednesday, March 12: Once the expected federal election is over, we need a special war cabinet to deal with the U.S., a reader says. You can write to us too, at letters@ottawacitizen.com

Now that the Liberals have a new leader, we need to turn our attention to the coming election. I urge all eligible Canadians to vote. In recent federal elections voter turnout has been over 60 per cent but often not by much. This is not good enough. We must aim for a voter turn-out in excess of 90 per cent to demonstrate that we care about our country and that, no matter which party we support, we will do whatever it takes to uphold Canada’s sovereignty.

Furthermore, whoever leads the new government should immediately form a war cabinet, along the lines of England’s war cabinet of the Second World War. Such a war cabinet, functioning as a subset of the entire cabinet, would include key opposition members, as well as highly qualified experts from business, unions, trade associations, academia, the legal profession and other appropriate fields.

This unity of purpose and large voter turnout are absolutely essential to overcome the existential threat launched against Canada by our erstwhile American friends.

Tony Manera, Ottawa

Which leader will help Canadians?

Re: Kurl, Which leader can best  harness Canadian’s anger? March 8.

Decades of short-sighted policies have left us with an economy that is so integrated with that of our stronger neighbour that we are extremely vulnerable.  I want to hear a plan from our would-be leaders to get us out of that trap. I have not heard one.

I hear people saying that they will act tough, but I want someone who will act smart. I hear people saying that they will hurt Americans, but I want someone who will help Canadians. Hurting others doesn’t help us. Telling Trump and his supporters that their policies are dumb doesn’t help us. Disingenuous attacks on other politicians won’t help either.

I want leaders with a believable, constructive plan to free Canada from its vulnerability to U.S. dictates. Where are they?

Dave Parnas, Ottawa

Americans DO respect Canada

As a neighbour, visitor and friend of Canada and Canadians, I was disappointed to hear future prime minister Mark Carney promise to continue tariffs against the United States until “America shows us respect.”

That isn’t to say that I — and many other Americans — don’t support such tariffs: we do, because we know you have to fight fire with fire. But to suggest that we Americans aren’t showing our respect towards your great country is not true. Donald Trump is NOT America. His administration is NOT America. Tariffs are NOT an American policy: they are, unfortunately, Donald Trump’s policy.

Sadly, the ignorance and stupidity of far too many voters last November made Trump our president for the next four years. That is the tribulation we must suffer for having a political party that places a higher value on its survival than on the democratic ideals they were sworn to protect. I urge you not to think of Americans as your enemy or a nation disrespectful of your history, friendship and values. We both know, however, who is.
