(Photo by Chris Stone/Times of San Diego)Tiger Woods committed Friday to playing the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, returning to one of his favorite venues, the site of one of his biggest triumphs.
It will be his first PGA Tour start since the British Open last July and Woods will be playing â and walking â 18 holes in competition for the first time since he had a microdiscectomy in September to alleviate pain.
He also will compete just over a week after the loss of his mother, Kultida Woods, who died Tuesday at age 80.
Woods, 49, is the host of the Genesis Invitational, which was moved from Riviera Country Club because of wildfires that devastated the surrounding community of Pacific Palisades.
He has never won at Riviera, but his eight wins at Torrey Pines include the 2008 U.S. Open, when he was hobbled by injury yet somehow prevailed in a sudden-death playoff for his 14th major title.
The public course along the Pacific Ocean is also the site of his most recent top-10 finish on the PGA Tour, a tie for ninth at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2020.

The Genesis Invitational is a limited-field signature event with no cut. Woods hasnât played four rounds in an event since last yearâs Masters, when he broke the tournament record for consecutive cuts made with his 24th.
But he finished last among those who made the cut, shooting 82-77 over the weekend. He played the other three major championships last year, missing the cut each time.
Woods has 82 PGA Tour victories, tied with Sam Snead for the most ever. His last win was the Zozo Championship in 2019.
He missed all of 2021 after a car crash in Los Angeles in February of that year caused severe injuries to his lower right leg.
Woods skipped the unofficial event he hosts in December, the Hero World Challenge, but he played an exhibition with his son, Charlie, and has competed in the indoor TGL league.

On the previous episode of âMotel California,â Ji Kang Hee and Cheon Yeon Sooâs love for one another grew stronger as they began to correct the misunderstandings that surrounded them. However, they were surprised and troubled when Kang Heeâs father opposed their relationshipâand they decided to go on a nighttime drive to Seoul to get some fresh air. On the way, Kang Hee hallucinated a vision of a car accident involving her mother before losing consciousness, and the episode ended with a worried Yeon Soo rushing her to the emergency room.
In newly released stills from the dramaâs upcoming episode, the sweet, blissful vibe that Kang Hee and Yeon Soo exuded in the previous episode is nowhere to be found. Instead, both of them have tears in their eyes as they gaze sadly at one another, and Yeon Soo looks crushed by both sorrow and shock.
The visible pain in both charactersâ eyes raises the question of what could have happened to the coupleâand where this unhappy late-night conversation will lead them.
âIn Episode 10, the full story behind Kang Heeâs shocking car-accident hallucination will be revealed, leading to a huge whirlwind in not only Kang Hee and Yeon Sooâs relationship but also the entire plot,â teased the dramaâs production team. âPlease give lots of interest to âMotel California,â which is racing towards its climax.â
The next episode of âMotel Californiaâ will air on February 8 at 9:50 p.m. KST.
