Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and former finalist on The Voice Ryan Whyte Maloney died by suicide earlier this week. New details about his tragic end have surfaced, revealing that he took his life after arguing with his fiancée over the location of a jacket.
People obtained the police report that revealed the incident that took place in the moments before Maloney’s tragic death. According to the report, he had performed at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino the night he died. He and his fiancée were on their way home from the show and Maloney was intoxicated.

Per the report, the argument started when Maloney’s fiancée asked him if he had her jacket. He said he didn’t have it and she continued questioning him about it. After a back-and-forth, he reportedly called his significant other a “b*tch” before taking his handgun out of the glove compartment and getting out of the car.
Maloney’s fiancée reported that she heard a single gunshot before rolling down her window to yell for him. However, he was apparently out of earshot. As a result, she exited the vehicle and ran after him. That is when she heard a second gunshot and watched Maloney collapse. She called 911 and first responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
The report stated that Maloney had a history of self-harm and suicidal thoughts. As a result, it is likely that his actions weren’t due solely to the spat he had with his fiancée. Instead, the argument was likely the final straw for him. However, it is impossible to know what was going on in his mind in the moments before he took his own life.
Ryan Whyte Maloney competed in season six of The Voice in 2014. His Blind Audition earned him a four-chair turn and he chose to join Blake Shelton’s team. Maloney was one of Shelton’s final five contestants before getting eliminated.
Earlier this week, The Voice’s official Twitter account shared a brief but heartfelt statement about Maloney’s passing. “Ryan Whyte Maloney will always be in our hearts and minds. He was part of The Voice family and he will be missed,” the post read.
