Trailblazing journalist Mary Kay Cabot shares career advice with students at Cleveland Media Academy
Mary Kay Cabot talked to journalism students about how she started her career and what advice young journalists can follow.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland Media Academy students began their program on Jan. 11 by meeting Mary Kay Cabot and learning what it takes to succeed in journalism.
Mary Kay Cabot, a prominent journalist specializing in the Browns for cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer, spoke to students about coming up as a trailblazing female journalist and gave advice for aspiring writers. Cabot detailed her rise in the industry by describing what it was like to be one of the first female sports reporters since the 1980s when she started â emphasizing the challenges and triumphs she experienced as a woman breaking into a male-dominated field, and how she could thrive.
An essential piece of advice Cabot shared was the importance of becoming aware of your self-worth and showing that in any newsroom.
âMake yourself so valuable that they would be lost without you,â she told students.
Cabot also gave advice on how to conduct thorough interviews, stressing the importance of unveiling small details that can make a story stand out. She also explained that creating a strong and genuine relationship with who you are interviewing can greatly improve both the interview and the story itself.
Nora Baker is a high school student and reporter in the Cleveland Media Academy, which is an eight-week high school journalism program sponsored by cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer in partnership with News 5, Signal Cleveland, WKYC Studios and the Greater Cleveland Association of Black Journalists.
