The Kansas City Chiefs' Travis Kelce has been ripped into for failing to protect Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LIX with fans accusing him of a lack of effort as the Philadelphia Eagles romped to a dominant 40-22 victory.
The 29-year-old Mahomes was offered little protection by his offensive line throughout the night in New Orleans and was sacked six times at the Caesars Superdome, meaning Andy Reid's team could never really get the ball moving.
Philadelphia's defensive line repeatedly broke through the Chiefs to land hits on the quarterback and fans were stunned as to what they were seeing, considering the reputation Reid's side has.
However, videos are now surfacing as experts break down just exactly what happened on Sunday, February 9 and Kelce finds himself criticized for seeming to not put in enough effort to stopping Josh Sweat running at Mahomes, who he eventually tackled.
One user said via X.com, formerly Twitter, "Half a** effort from kelce there."
A second added, "I knew there was lack of effort but..."
And a third commented, "Check out the pathetic block attempt from Kelce and tell me it wasn't effort. If Kelce isnt moving up to the second level to block he's garbage. Can only block players he has 40+ lbs on."
Some fans even went as far as to suggest the low effort means the three-time Super Bowl-winning tight end should actually call time on his NFL career by retiring, and his productivity supports that suggestion.
Mahomes struggled on the night and so did Kelce, who only managed to make four catches for 39 yards with the majority of the action coming in "garbage time" after the Eagles had already raced into an unassailable lead.
Prior to that, he had made zero catches in the first half of the game. That means Kelce closes out the season with four touchdowns and 998 yards on 110 receptions, statistically one of the quietest seasons of his career.
