Two Welsh filmmakers win Oscars
Laurie Crawley and Rhys Salcombe both won statuettes at the Oscars 2025
This year's Academy Awards saw three Welsh nominees, and last night's event saw two of them walk away with the famous golden statue.
First of the Welsh winners was cinematographer Laurie 'Lol' Crawley, who won best cinematography for 'The Brutalist. at the 97th Academy Awards. He originally was born in Shrewsbury in Shropshire but later grew up in Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain in Powys, where he attended Ysgol Llanfyllin.
In his acceptance speech, the cinematographer thanked "all my friends back in Wales" and said he had huge affection for the country her grew up in.

When asked in an interview with BBC Breakfast what the victory means for Wales, Crawley responded: "I'm very proud. It doesn't seem that long since I was there to be quite honest. I have a huge affection for that country and I'm going back to Ysgol Uwchradd Llanfyllin and do a talk in the assembly."
Llanfyllin headteacher Dewi Owen said: âLolâs journey from a pupil at Ysgol Llanfyllin to an internationally celebrated cinematographer is an inspiration to our students and the wider community. His success highlights the incredible potential of young people from our school and local area to achieve greatness in the creative industries and beyond.

Welsh special effects expert Rhys Salcombe attends the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar Party
The second Welshman to walk away with an Oscar, was Rhys Salcombe, from Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, who was part of the team that won the best visual effects award for work on Dune: Part Two. The Welsh-Canadian special effects artist has also worked on major projects such as Blade Runner 2049 and Star Trek Beyond among others.
Unfortunately, for the third Welsh nominee, Trevor Matthews, who was among four producers of The Brutalist, the film missed out on the best picture award.

The Welsh- Canadian producer, is the youngest son of business magnate and Celtic Manor Resort owner Sir Terry Matthews who originally grew up in Newport and was born in the former hospital.
