Tyrone Mings makes surprise revelation after Aston Villa redemption

Tyrone Mings claims his emotions after playing a crucial role in Aston Villa’s 3-1 win over Club Brugge weren’t much different to when he made a bizarre mistake at the Jan Breydel Stadium earlier this season.

In the end, that 1-0 league phase defeat was relatively inconsequential as Villa still qualified for the round of 16 via an eighth-placed finish.

Brugge beat Atalanta over two legs in the knockout play-offs to set-up a reunion with Villa, but fell to a home defeat in the first leg on Tuesday.

Leon Bailey opened the scoring in the first three minutes, before an own goal by Brandon Mechele and then a penalty from Marco Asensio opened a two-goal cushion.

“I think both times here have been a night to remember for different reasons,” Mings admitted. “I am fully aware it’s only half-time in the tie, it sounds like such a cliche but I don’t really feel much different tonight than I did when we left last time.

“Our responsibility as players is to stay calm and not be too high or too low and I think it is really important for the fans to enjoy this moment.

“We have a healthy, but delicate lead going into the second leg. We will treat it with the adequate respect like we did tonight.”

Asked if the mistake he made back in November was on his mind, Mings said: “It’s impossible for it not to be because everybody keeps bringing it up all the time.

“When we saw the draw and knew we were coming here I was fully aware people were going to talk about it again, as they should because I think that game had 0-0 written all over it.

“I have said since that if it was going to happen to anybody and be such a big talking point I’m happy for it to happen to me. You see the character to come here tonight and put in the shift we did was good.

‌

“We have such attacking quality that if we stay in games and defend as a team we are always going to get chances, whether that happens in the first five minutes or the last five minutes.

“It was just about learning from the last game, penalty aside, what didn’t we do well that day, what could we have done better. It was a night to be proud of, but we have a long way to go.”

Mings made a crucial intervention with the game level at 1-1 in the second half as he cleared Hans Vanaken’s header away from the far post, with the ball heading in. That was redemption for the error he made in the league phase clash earlier in the campaign when he picked the ball up in his own box.

“I have made a few goalline clearances in my time at Villa, I can’t not know what I am doing every time, at some point someone has to say ‘good clearance’,” Mings said.

“It’s instinct, as a defender when the ball goes over my head my natural reaction is to drop onto the line in case something like that happens.

“If we did that another 10 times again, I’m not sure I’d be able to do it, make that fine of a touch to make it go around the post, but you don’t need to, you just need to do it at the time.”

If Villa complete the job against Club Brugge next Wednesday, either Liverpool or Paris Saint-Germain will be waiting for them in the quarter-finals.

“The dreaming and all of that really is for you reporters and fans,” Mings said when asked how Villa can go in the competition. “Our job is to promise the fans we will always stay consistent and stay respectful and humble of the challenges we have in front of us.

“What that ends up with us achieving at the end of the season is something for the fans to dream about. Our job is to focus on Brentford, our job is then to focus on the second leg.

“Where we end up at the end of next Wednesday is hopefully in a very strong position in the league and the Champions League. Our job is to focus on Saturday now and then take it from there.”
