US commerce secretary takes aim at Ireland ‘tax scam’ day after Taoiseach meets Trump; Burke family protest outside gala event
Taoiseach Micheál Martin met US president Donald Trump yesterday in a hotly anticipated meeting as part of St Patrick’s Day celebrations. His visit today continued with trade and enterprise events.

Tariffs harm business and are not good for consumers, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said as US President Donald Trump announced his plans for 200pc tariffs on EU alcohol.
Mr Martin said tariffs will also hike inflation and said while he hoped the tariff threats would “settle”, he said the EU should negotiate with the United States government.
“I think the only effective way to deal with is, in my view, is through dialogue between the European Union and the United States government,” he said speaking in Washington DC.
“We’ve seen some patterns emerge in terms of the ongoing engagement between the United States and Canada and Mexico.
“Tariffs harm business, tariffs increase inflation and are not good for the consumer and are not good for business. That’s our view but I do believe there will be some distance to go yet.”
He said he did not discuss the 200pc tariffs with President Trump when they met yesterday but said they spoke “more generally”.
“On the hopeful side, one would hope that all this will settle in time. The uncertainty does create difficulties for business, does create uncertainty for business decisions. That certainly is challenging and businesses will have to adapt as this evolves and Government will work with business."
He said Ireland and the EU should simplify red tape to make it more competitive and expand the single market.
The Taoiseach on the last two days of his US trip will focus on trade and enterprise and will meet a number of Irish companies based in the US.
Mr Martin said “gracious host” President Trump told him, if there are any issues, “don’t hesitate to pick up the phone”.
“I think he doesn’t bear any ill will towards Ireland and that’s very, very clear," he said.
The Taoiseach spent about an hour in the Oval Office on Wednesday with President Trump and held a private 10 minute bilateral with him. The Taoiseach was also in President Trump’s car on the way to the Speaker’s Lunch in Capitol Hill and the two men spoke about Northern Ireland.
“President Trump has a different approach and a different style to meetings, we saw that yesterday,” said Mr Martin.
He said President Trump asked about the peace process in Northern Ireland and linked this back to the Middle East and “is it possible to unite and bring people together”.
“My objective, fundamentally in all of this, how do we protect strategically Irish economic gains over the last number of years, how do we protect jobs in our country.
“That is my overriding objective, to protect jobs in Ireland, look at new areas where we can create newer jobs.”Gabija Gataveckaite
