Vernon Kay has cheekily addressed some light-hearted "complaints" from his BBC Radio 2 team. Since taking over the much-loved mid-morning slot in May 2023, originally helmed by radio legend Ken Bruce, Vernon has made the studio very much his own.
On Thursday's show, he shared with listeners his preference for a brighter work environment. Vernon joked on air: "Everyone's in a giddy mood this morning in the studio. Feeling fine. I've had a few complaints from the team for putting up the studio lights."
He continued, revealing his fondness for keeping things well-lit during the day: "There are some Radio 2 DJs who like it really dark. I like it really bright because I like to get a sense of the fact that it is daytime.
"I don't want to use a torch to look at what is coming up on the show. I like it nice and bright and fresh."
Not missing a beat for a bit of humour, he quipped: "It would be nice if one of these was a little bit UV so I could get a tan at the same time, tanning indoors," reports the Manchester Evening News.
Vernon's studio preferences have been a point of banter before. Back in November, he ribbed Radio One presenter Greg James on-air after discovering someone had been tampering with his setup, leaving behind Radio One microphone covers.
The doting dad-of-two didn't hesitate then to pin the blame on Greg, telling his audience with a laugh that he'd "just blame Greg James".

The incident sparked accusations that Vernon was "insulting" his colleague. However, Vernon stood his ground and confronted Greg on live radio, saying: "Can you have a word with your team? It's a disgrace."
Greg denied the allegations, stating: "It's not me Vern, I've checked and it's not them either. I've checked everyone."
Vernon responded by describing the state of the studio as "like a children's playroom", but insisted he "wasn't having a pop". This led Greg to comment that Vernon had "changed" but still had a "Radio One heart".
Vernon hosted shows on Radio One from 2004 to 2012, before being replaced by Matt Edmondson. After a stint on Radio X, he returned to the BBC in 2021, initially covering Rylan Clark's Saturday slot.
In addition to his radio work, Vernon has enjoyed a successful TV career, hosting programmes like All Star Family Fortunes, T4, and Formula E. He is married to Strictly Come Dancing's Tess Daly and finished third on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! in 2020, behind winner Giovanna Fletcher and runner-up Jordan North.
