Viola Davis takes on the role of Commander In Chief in the upcoming Amazon MGM action-thriller “G20,” set to release to Prime Video on April 10.
In the movie’s trailer, where Davis stars alongside Anthony Anderson, Marsai Martin, Antony Starr, and more, the family of President Taylor Sutton (Davis) heads to Cape Town, South Africa, with her family, at what she originally believes to be a world leader summit. But as the trailer progresses, a terrorist group holds attendees hostage for plans to have them participate in a corruptive deepfake project.
“Now we control the narrative,” antagonist Rutledge (Starr) says in the trailer.
After President Sutton’s husband and children disappear, she takes matters into her own hands to protect the hostages with gun-toting force.
Directed by Patricia Riggen, “G20” is a particularly timely movie in the months following the U.S. presidential election, in which former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris ran for the Democratic ticket. At the Red Sea Film Festival last December, Davis described President Sutton as “a completely fictitious character that was born out of the imagination of several writers,” per “Variety.”
“It was the sort of thing you’d imagine as a kid, just playing the most heroic character you could possibly play, and you create Danielle Sutton, who was a war hero and then won the election on a liberal ticket,” she continued. “I think it just so happens that it mirrored a lot of what was happening in American politics at the time, but really it’s just meant to be a fun movie.”
At the 82nd Annual Golden Globes last month, the EGOT recipient was given the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award, recognizing the lifetime achievements of entertainers.
