Passengers were lucky to escape with their lives after a Delta Air Lines flight inverted on the runway during landing, a harrowing incident caught on the camera of a bystander.
An airline worker was casually filming the descent of Delta Flight 4819 when flames erupted from its back end, a wing of the plane broke off, and it immediately rolled over onto its roof. Miraculously, all 80 souls on board managed to survive.
The video, shared by Aircraft Maintenance Engineer on X, at first showed nothing out of the ordinary as the flight traveling from Minneapolis approached an icy runway at Toronto Pearson International Airport. Inside the jet, however, passengers described a jarring environment as they felt it struggle to land while battling wind gusts of up to 65 mph.
Peter Koukov, one of the passengers on the flight, told the Daily Mail they were left “hanging upside down like bats” after the intact, upside-down plane slowed to a stop, adding he could see that “there was a big fireball on the left side of the plane.” Another described the landing as “very forceful.”
The crash left 18 injured, including a young child, and occurred around 2:15 pm local time on Monday. It is the latest in a string of devastating airline crashes or collisions that have been mostly fatal.
Canadian authorities told the outlet they are still working to cordon off nearby runways and determine the cause of the crash. Officials from the U.S. are assisting in the investigation.
Another clip of Flight 4819’s crash landing shows the plane tipping over before it is engulfed in smoke, an impact that matches the description one passenger told CNN when they “went sideways and… we skidded on our side and flipped over on our back.”

“When we hit, it was super hard,” John Nelson said. “I did notice the winds were super gusty. The snow had kinda blown over the runways. So coming in, it was routine, but it was noticeable that the runways were in kind of a weird condition.”
As soon as the plane came to a halt, “there was a big fireball on the left side of the plane.”
“Thankfully everybody was okay. We tried to get off as quickly as possible. There was another explosion, but luckily, the firefighters got out of there,” he said.
An initial assessment was provided to CNN by Former National Transportation Safety Board managing director Peter Goelz, who said it appeared that an unfortunately timed gust of wind may have contributed to the plane capsizing and a wing to be torn off. The impact caused fuel cells to ignite, resulting in the fire.
Koukov had been traveling for a ski trip and filming much of it, so he was prepared to record a video of himself and other passengers being led out of the upside-down plane. “Being alive feels pretty cool today,” he darkly joked.
