Warning issued for millions of UK households with 'seven' broadband providers

Consumers were asked to rate their supplier based on whether or not they have experienced outages. BT led the survey with 81 per cent of customers reporting no outages, followed by TalkTalk at 77 per cent. Plusnet, Virgin Media, and Sky follow with 72 per cent, 70 per cent, and 69 per cent respectively.

Vodafone, and EE trail were ranked towards the bottom 65 per cent, 63 per cent, and 60 per cent of users experiencing uninterrupted service. Peter Ames, broadband expert at Broadband Genie, said: "It's pretty shocking that in 2025 even the most reliable broadband provider in the UK still sees 19% of its customers experiencing broadband outages.

"If this level of service was delivered by other essential utilities, serious questions would be asked. We always recommend that consumers check independent reviews, especially in their area as provider reliability can vary by location, and at the very least ensure their provider is signed up to Ofcom's automatic compensation scheme."

Money Saving Expert has explained how customers can haggle with broadband firms. "Switching usually nets you the cheapest prices, but if you are out of contract â or nearing the end of your contract â you could try to haggle your price," it said.
"As there's stiff competition, companies are frantic to keep hold of customers. That is why in our polls on haggling with service companies, communication providers are frequently among the easiest to haggle with. In our December 2024 poll, 71% of those who haggled with their broadband provider were successful.
