The Weeknd has shared the first trailer for his psychological thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow. Watch the clip, in which heâs alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan, below.
In the two-minute-long clip, which dropped today (February 4), the singer, real name Abel Tesfaye, plays a version of himself whoâs struggling with insomnia and seems to be facing a breakdown.
Tesfaye has spoken about retiring his stage name recently, and this is something hinted to in the trailer. A voice says, âCall me by the familiar name,â as someone in the background yells âAbel.â
The Lionsgate movie is set for release on May 16. It was written by Tesfaye alongside Trey Edward Shults and Reza Fahim, with Shults also directing. Joining Tesfaye, Ortega and Keoghan in the cast are Gabby Barrett and Charli DâAmelio.

The official synopsis reads: âA musician [Tesfaye] plagued by insomnia gets pulled into an odyssey with a stranger [Ortega] who begins to unravel the very core of his existence.â

The Weeknd released his latest studio album, also called âHurry Up Tomorrowâ, on January 31, and itâs the final part of a trilogy following 2020âs âAfter Hoursâ and 2022âs âDawn FMâ. The movie has been described as an âextensionâ of the LP.
In a four-star review, NME wrote: âIf this is a swansong for The Weeknd, itâs a fitting one. Tesfaye is pushing forward before he exhausts the collective fascination with his alter ego, and thatâs no small achievement. When he sings âIâd rather leave somewhat of a legacyâ on âThe Abyssâ, itâs clear thereâs no âsomewhatâ about it.â
On Sunday (February 2), meanwhile, Tesfaye made a surprise appearance at the Grammys to perform his new single âCry For Meâ, ending a boycott of the Grammys that began in 2021.
