We Now Know Who Got the No. 1 Jar of Meghan Markle’s Strawberry Jam Last Spring—and It’s Not Who You Might Think
It wasn't Prince Harry who received the No. 1 jar of Meghan Markle's American Riviera Orchard strawberry jam, it was Doria Ragland, Meghan Markle's mother, Meghan revealed on her new Netflix show 'With Love, Meghan.'
Last spring, Meghan Markle announced the creation of her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard—which, as of last month, has been renamed to As Ever.
Along with the brand’s announcement came the first glimpse into its product offerings: strawberry jam, which Meghan sent out 50 jars of. How do we know the exact number? Because each jar of jam was labeled with “3 of 50” or “44 of 50”—and so on and so forth. Celebrities like Mindy Kaling, Chrissy Teigen, and Kris Jenner posted their respective jam jars—and corresponding numbers—to social media, but American Riviera Orchard’s first-ever customer never revealed themselves.

Now, thanks to Meghan’s Netflix lifestyle series With Love, Meghan—which premiered on March 4—we know who got strawberry jam jar No. 1 from the brand formerly known as American Riviera Orchard. And it may not be who you think—it’s Meghan’s mom Doria Ragland, Meghan revealed on the show, and not, say, Prince Harry.
“People took it very personally, the hierarchy,” Meghan said on the show. “Anyone who got them, I hope they felt like I wanted to share this with you.”

Kaling reflected on receiving a jar of the jam, calling it “one of the most glamorous moments of my life”—but asked Meghan about her methodology behind the numbering system. “As a very hierarchical person, I was like, ‘Who are these people? Does having a lower number make me more special?’” Kaling said.
Meghan’s response? “It was not a ranking!” She added, “It was just ‘let me share them,’ and then people started to take it very personally.”
On February 18, Meghan revealed on her Instagram that the brand’s name had changed to As Ever, which she had been hinting at for weeks, signing off many of her Instagram posts “As ever, Meghan.” Later, in a mood board for the brand posted to her Instagram, Meghan potentially revealed As Ever’s first product offering: raspberry jam, as a label for the product could be seen amongst other meaningful items that inspired her.
She even addressed the jam for which she’s become famous for in her February 18 video, telling viewers that, though the brand’s name had changed, at least one product offering would remain. “Of course there will be fruit preserves,” she clarified. “I think we’re all clear at this point that jam is my jam.”
“But there are so many more products that I just love, and now it's time to share them with you,” she added. “So I just can’t wait for you to see it.”
